We started on Friday night 11pm and got lost. We didn't get to CHSP until 3am. It was dark and we were tired. Anyway to make a story short we overslept, got lost finding a bait store outside CHSP, purchased fishing licenses, ate breakfast and we got to the water 10:30am. Sorry we were not familar to this area. I still couldn't believe they ask too much to get a fishing license. It was a nice day though. We got about 9 baby sand sharks (dog fish), a over 10 in croaker but lost while trying to video, a couple small spots. We got in at 1p to meet M&G group and we are not allow to get in the Camp so we went out for chinese food. We came back and talked to a guys who had a mohawk style haircut. He got a nice 19 inches tautog using sand fleas. So we went to bait store outside CHSP and got a half gallon green crabs, togs hooks to see if we got any luck. We got to the water around 4pm and wanted to fish along the structure at red light house for togs. I felt it was nippling but then I got stuck. So I kept fighting to get it out for a while. Finally I got it out. It was a big toadfish that I have never seen. I got couple of them like that so I gave up. we got in around 7pm and met another kayak fishing. He said he went out to the white light house in ocean side. He showed us he didn't get any but a big toadfish but it was 1/2 size of my toadfish and we told him not to keep it. He is a college student. Nice to see Sam and talked to Jimbo. I am sorry I couldn't see the rest. I am trying to figure out how to post pictures.
Beautiful weather and a not so beautiful bite on the 9th Fished the pier with a bucktail, fished the break wall drifting shrimp trolling bucktails and ratl traps using a bottom rig with fish bites etc with nothing to show, and then about 11 I got my first bites with my spot rig drifting shallow water south of the pier. After missing about a dozen small bites I finally catch a mullet. The skunk was off and it was time for lunch so I headed for shore tucking the mullet in a bag for later. After lunch I decided I needed to get my revenge on an almost fishless morning so I went back down to the pier and launched again. Chunk mister mullet up and catch sand shark after sand shark with a snapper blue in the mix. Decide I need to try for some more bait so I start using my spot rig and catch 4 spot over the next hour and then work my way back out deep near the peir and anchor for the night bite. Right at dark I get a hit on my live lined spot and bring in a 16 inch flounder Figured I was on to something but no more bites on the spot or a tipped bucktail over the next hour. Decide to call it a night and headed for shore. Slept in my car at the park & ride at 50 and woke up right on time to hit the BB at sunrise.
Sunday morning. The water was rippling with bay anchovies when I got there and I worked my way out to the bridge looking for spot. An hour later and 2 spot in the yak and I decide trolling bucktails and jigging Bass assassins was a better idea Started working my way out the east bound span and the birds and fish show up right in front of me. Catch 3 schoolies and move on looking for some larger fish. Throw my BA right against a pylon and wak, a nice 22 inch football takes some drag and then comes to the boat! Start thinking I am on to something again and fish for the next hour with only one more schollie. Figure it was time for the spot to make an appearance so I start live lining across the space between the bridges. Half way across a little line gets pulled out and I reel in half a spot Guess there are still some blues around. Work over the to the east bound span, drop spot number 2 and with in 3 minutes have another 18 inch football beside the yak! Jig some and then head to shore looking for spot. Another half hour without a bite and I decide artificails are going t have to work. Head back out jigging the pylons and trolling until I come to pylon 31 where I had got the 22. Drop the BA right against the pylon on the up current side, let it drop, and then jig. Bump, dang he missed it, jig jig, hooked up!! Felt like I had a whale! Quick little run and then he just took off!!!!! Couldn't slow him down! Unfortunatly he went on the north side of a pylon and the current insisted I head south Oh well, tried jigging some more but couldn't by another bite in the next hour. Headed in and got some lunch and came home to take my first shower since friday morning and sleep in a bed for the first time this weekend. What a great weekend even if the fish didn't completly cooperate Good fishin

Got to CHSP just at dark Friday evening. Real fun setting up the new tent in the dark. Woke up at zero dark thirty Sat morning with a slight headache thanks to Mr. Jack Daniels, and headed to the launch site. Thank goodness TJ new where he was going cuz I sure as heck would have gotten lost. Launced and started fishing my way out along the pier. Took about 15 mins and FISH ON,,,,, yea, well, it was a spot. It actually took me about an hour to catch half a dozen spot. I could do the FISH ON thing for each spot that I caught, which would make the morning outing sound like is was a bonanza. Unfortunately, the fishing was slow, i.e., not happening. But hey, one of those spot was pretty big. So about then I was thinking, what the hell am I doing here when the BB has been fishing great?? Headed back to camp for lunch and had a great time with the gang, although I was dead tired. I thought about heading back home so I could fish the BB in the morning but I was so dang tired, I didn't think I could make the trip home without some sleep. Downed a 7hr energy drink and I was back in shape. It perked me up so much that I hung out with the survivors and we headed down to Indian River Inlet for a evening fish. After trying to squeeeeeze in between the locals on the side of the inlet, a couple folks crossed my line and I gave up. So other than the spot, It was a fishless day,,, up to that point.... and I headed home. Buuuuut, I couldn't pass up fishing Kent Narrows on the way home, so I dropped in at about 9:30pm and proceeded to catch about a dozen 12-16" rock on a "snow flake fly" drifting in the surface. I got home about 11:30.
Sunday morning after a mishap with the alarm, I ended up at the BB (Hemingways) and was in the water by 8am. On my way out to the bridge, just at the end rocks that go out to the bridge from the launch site, there were breaking fish. I tossed a lazer blade out and on the 3rd cast got a heavy 21 incher. That sucker was fat. I really debated on keeping the fish, but I thought, hell, I haven't even begun to live line and was thinking that I was really going to get into some decent fish, so I released it and started fishing for spot,,, kept fishing for spot.......and fished for spot some more. Went back to throwing the lazer blade, and got a 17 inch rock. No spot in anywhere to be found. I trolled a BA for a while and ran into Chimo. I was surprised to see him. I thought he was still at CHSP. We both then tried to catch some spot, you know, strength in numbers. This time, with the two of us fishing for them, we were sure to get some right? Nope. I did end up catching one bay anchovy which I live lined and caught a 15 incher. By that time I was a little bummed that I didn't keep the 21 incher that I caught right off the get go. I was so desperate for spot that I headed back to my car and got the spot that were on ice from the day before. Went back out and trolled with the dead spot and didn't do beans. I trolled my way back in with the lazer blade. If you stay about 50 yards off the rock wall as you head back to the beach, there is a large area that is 6-8' deep. I saw a few bay anchovies in the surface in front of me while I was trolling in. As I passed over, I saw a big cloud of bait on my fish finder and as my lazer blade trolled through the cloud, whammo - 26 incher.
That one I kept. That worked out kind of good, so I trolled back and forth in that 6-8' water out in front of Hemingways. I headed for the beach. When I pulled my yak out, it was 3:30. A guy that was fishing off the rock wall between the beach and Hemingways came over to see my yak and fish, he watched me catch it. He then told me, get this,,,,,that he caught about 50 SPOT!!!! Right there next to Hemingways. I say to myself, "self, now's your chance to go get some real rock", so I give the guy my fish and,,, yea,,, I headed back out, caught a dozen spot in about 15 minutes and then went back out to the bridge for some live lining. Finally.
To shorten this long story, I caught a couple short rock and had a lot of my spot bit in half by blue fish. I fished just about til dark. I should have kept those two keepers!
It was a good weekend. I had a great time meeting everyone at the M&G.
Jim & Wayne- you guys are intense! I wanted to fish the bridge on the way back today but the gf isn't ready for it and we just came on back. Jim, I saw you on your way back to corner of the southern span on your way back to hemmingways. I thought there was no way that could have been you still out there so late! Sounds like you still had a great day your there and got a few decent fish.
We're heading out tomorrow, not sure where yet. Possibly 301 area but fishing has been slow down there. I had a great time at the m&g but I wish the fishing was as nice as the weather! I'm gonna make a bb trip one evening this week and try to jig some fish. I'll let you all know when I'm heading that way. Thanks again for the snowflake tips!
Ditto! I also saw you guys when we came back across the bridge. I had thoughts about it but we wanted to be home for the football games.
It was great seeing everyone and meeting some for the first time. The weather was spectacular! Too bad the fishing was rather slow. Nice pics guys. Thanks for posting them.
Great M&G choice, Sam. I've never been there. Will explore there again. And thanks for the tip to return via route 16. Much better. We got home in just over 2 1/2 hours. Not bad.
I had the time of my life out there! I haven't camped in over 20 years so I really got a kick out of that! The surf was fun although we ain't catch anything but Dogfish and skates... but it was fun to get some pullage!
