New question from: New member, rookie kayak fisher, a few questions for you veterans

New thread, same title. I picked up my Jackson Big Tuna last night (from the guys at Delaware Paddlesports in Lewes) you wont hear me say a negative thing about John & Brian. I hope others here have had the same incredible experience when dealing with D.P. At any rate, my question revolves around Fish Finders & electronics, what are some of the more popular brands and models you guys are using? what about power source? I am a former bass tx angler and have owned a few of the major brand of fiberglass bass boats, that were capable of holding 4 - 25lb batteries, but what r u guys using to power your electronics? I plan on fishing small rivers mostly,where i dont anticipate needing it, but i have a few nearby lakes that finding submerged cover and drops would be helpful. I got some great advice on my last post, thanks for all the replies...I did go with the Truck Bed extender and it works great. wfauby

i use lowrance ffers have had no problems with them. for battery i use a 12v 12ahr battery the kind used for exit signs, they last for about a month brfore recharging

I use one like in the link above, but it depends on what fish finder you are running. I have a down imaging unit that draws more power so I have a larger battery (humminbird 798 HD DI). Previously I had a small piranamax that I'd run off 8 AA batteries and a battery holder from radio shack. You can run a few all day trips without the need for a recharge. The more amp hours on the battery, the longer it will run per current draw of the fish finder. It will be heavier though, so that's the trade off. The one in the link isn't too bad and is the max you should need even if you are powering lights as well. It is more bulky than some double As.

If you're like metroman who prefers to relax and let his kayak do the work, you'll need a much bigger battery

Come into my store (bass pro) and get the black 12 v battery they sell in hunting for 30 bucks. They sell the charger too. Or u could come to the marine dept and get the humminbird 160 portable (comes w black 12 v battery charger suction cup transducer etc) for 129.99. I have an ascend fs12t and am thinkin about a mark 4 or elite 4. Not sure yet tho. Btw the black 12 batt that powers the portable we leave on for 3 plus days straight without recharging.

I bought mine from Cabela's it is like the ones pictured (9aH) gel battery...$20.00 It last several trips without thinking about it- I recharge it from time to time, but it has never been completely out of juice-

I've had this battery for two years and I can run my FF for 20+ hrs on a full charge. I have an older Humminbird b&w unit (535) that doesn't draw very much juice.
