  • Newbie here-introduction

Hello all! Been lurking around here for a bit so thanks everyone for the info you’ve posted...been a big help for me to get back into fishing this area. Grew up fishing DE bay waters and offshore then moved to south west Fl where I got hooked on yak fishing in the everglades. Been back up here for a while but just getting back to fishing. Live in the upper Chesapeake area and would love to meet up with some other yakers...willing to drive about 2 hrs if some of you are willing to let me join. Not looking for anyone’s hotspots just looking to "relearn" what runs where and when....and have some good company at the same time...tired of going by myself all the time. I'm off Tuesdays and Wednesdays if anyone is interested? Planning on fishing around the inner wall at Lewes, DE this Wednesday morning if anyone will be out there...

Thanks for welcoming me surfdog and moc. Roosevelt was next on my list, maybe I'll give that a try next week. I rarely get a weekend off, guess that's why I can never get anyone to go when I can :-) I have a green OK prowler 15 if anyone spots me at nearby locations. Thanks!

Seapinto – Welcome to the Chesapeake and to MKF. Soooo, you live in Elkton, huh. What a great location for a fisherman to live who wants to get back into local fishing. Maybe you know, maybe not… but the Susquehanna River (aka: Susky) and Susky Flats is the place to be for quality and diverse fishing, especially during the late winter and spring. Summer fishing is not too shabby either. From the base of Conowingo Dam down through the Susky Flats probably has the greatest diversity of fish species as anywhere else in MD. Catch & return striped bass action on the Susky Flats this past April and early May was way off the charts good. During April, hickory shad run up the Susky to the dam by the 100s of 1000s… fun to catch. Then there’s the fishing for large mouth bass, yellow perch, white perch, channel cats and many other fishes. The Flats are well suited for a kayak. The fast flowing Susky River from Lapidum up to Conowingo dam must be respected but it can be fished from shore. Drive around and explore the area, get to know it well, you won’t be disappointed. Scroll way back in this forum and read some of the posts back in April and early May of this year to read about the striper action some of us experienced… it was outstanding. From a fisherman’s perspective, you’re going to love the area. BTW, get to know the good people who own Herb's Tackle in the nearby town of North East. Herb's is the epicenter of fishing on the Susky flats.

Ok, so headed out early yesterday morning but when we got to the pier at daybreak the wind was blowing a bit too much, my dad was with me and I wasn’t 100% comfortable taking him to the wall incase things kicked up after the tide change. He’s 70 and in great shape so I don’t doubt his athletic ability but this was only his 2nd time fishing in a yak loaded with gear. We went to Roosevelt instead and of course everyone was seeking calmer water so it was crowded. We caught a few shorts so he still had fun.

HJS- thanks a ton for the rundown! I really do need to spend some more time in that area, after all it’s sooo much closer than Lewes. I think you just gave me the nudge I needed to focus some more attention there, thanks. I am somewhat familiar with the flats, went out last season for stripers a few times with a little luck but apparently my timing and choice of bait/location wasn’t in tune. Put in at the beach (flats side) at Turkey Point and at Perryville Park a few times. Agreed, I will definitely be spending a lot more time this winter doing research to be better prepared for next season! I have also done some pretty good cat fishing (years ago) in the Bohemia so I’d like to give that go soon. I’ll be sure to stop into Herb’s Tackle over the next couple weeks to check it out.

CB kayak 02- Did you ever make it over? We were out of there by about 1:30.
