  • Inexpensive polarized sunglass recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation for some cheap <$50 sunglasses? If you could recommend the color lens as well that would be appreciated. I would love to have a pair of Maui Jim's or Costa's but the budget right now does not allow it.

    Thanks

I needed a pair of sunglasses with brown lenses for a trip I took to Florida (sight casting to reds), so I bought a pair of Typhoons from West Marine on sale for about $35. They worked perfectly and don't look too bad, either. The only bad thing about them is that they have "TYPHOON" written in big goofy letters on the ear pieces. For the Bay, I would recommend gray lenses, but that's just a personal preference.

Many years ago, I used Flying Fisherman brand polarized glass sunglasses. I liked the glass lenses because they were much more resistant to scratching. They used to be sold in many tackle shops for less than $20. They worked well, but suffered from low quality control (you would need to try on several pairs of the same style to find one that fit properly).

I don't know if they are still available, and if so, where to find them.

How about a pair of Hobie Polarized frames and lenses? If you're going to be at the CBKFA tournament this weekend, make sure to look me up and I'll help you out. They have several pairs currently on sale for $35 for members of the Hobie Polarized club (ie: myself, possibly CBKayak02 and redfish12 as well as others). If you need something right away, the Strike Kings and Berkleys offered at Walmart are ok to get you by. A pair in bronze/amber and a pair in grey/black lenses is all you need. If you opt for that choice, you can get both pairs for under $50. Not the best, but they are serviceable for now until you can save the funds for higher end optics.

For future reference, Native (REI) offers several pairs in the $65-100 range, most Hobie Polarized retail for $70-100, Oakleys run around $125-160, then you start getting into some higher end models like Gargoyles, Smith Optics, Costa Del Mars (although the Costa Ballast at $149 is a screaming good deal with the 580P lens) and Maui Jims.

At the store, we get a lot of good feedback from customers about the Typhoons. There are some now that don't have the "big goofy letters on the ear pieces." I liked that one Bill. I also like gray lense. They do not distort color, as some brown lense do.

Hey, and one other thing. On certain sunglasses at West Marine, for a few bucks, you can buy a protection plan. I know at least some of the Typhoons are eligible. If they become broken, scratched or crushed, they are replaced. Just something to think about. We replace scratched and broken glasses all the time. This might also be an option.

Check out Peppers, they float and can usually be found for about $20. The orangish lenses were my favorite back in my tout fishing days, really made a difference!

I've only ever owned the cheap ones. What does a higher end pair of sunglasses get you? Am I missing out on something?

In many cases, more expensive sunglasses (outdoors sunglasses, not necessarily fashion ones) have better UV protection for your eyes, which can prolong your vision in your senior years.

The better glasses also have better clarity, scratch resistance, lense material and frames.

I sit on a sunglass or drop it in the water when I fish. I went through average one sunglass a month for last 30 years. For that I always carry two on my kayak. For the last two years I bought Berkley sunglasses at Wal-mart for $5.99. They are polarized, and I only buy green ones. I still have about 12 pairs at home. I bought all green ones whenever I saw them on the shelf.

I can't tell the difference between my $100 one and Berkley sun glasses when I fish as long as the Berkley is not scratched heavily.

I've purchased sunglasses from Sierra Trading Post and they have great prices. Many different brands including Costa. If you sign up for their "Deal Flyer" you will get email coupons to boot.
