  • Last minute trip - Today

After reading the reports from the weekend I have the urge to get out there and do some live-lining before the spot take off. Anyone available/interested?

It's a little windy out there right now but looks like it's going to lay down this afternoon. I think I can get there around 4:30 and fish till whenever. I've got lights, bring some with you too!

Haha I am throwing them in the rod pod for sure this time!

I'm still cranking on some stuff at work and my window is rapidly closing... anyone want to try and set something up for later this week?

Well I went anyway... but the wind derailed my trip. I need to check the current conditions instead of just what it says in the morning. The wind did not lay down and I'd say it was blowing sustained 15-20 with gusts to 30... it was pretty wild out there.

I had the bridge all to myself and I managed to hook one spot, about 2.5 inches before I bailed on getting bait. The waves near the pilings were large and some of the white caps broke over the front of my boat, so I went to the northbound span with one spot thinking I might be able to find an eddy. Wrong. It was even more intense between the spans. I got to the North span and dropped my baby spot... that thing must have felt like it was bungee jumping bc the front of my boat was traveling at least 6 feet up and then down and pulling my spot all over. I had what I thought to be one quick take, but when I saw my rod shiver again I knew what happened... I couldn't get very close to the pilings so I was in bluetown. I decided it was time to bag it because the wind seemed to be increasing and I knew I wasn't going to be able to catch a spot out here. I started slowly working my way back with my nose pointed into the waves and let the wind do the work to push me back to the southbound span. On the way back I marked an enormous school of fish, guessing blues with maybe some rock below. I only had a couple jigs with me because I went with the bare minimum incase I dumped out there. I got one cast in and lost a tail immediately but no hook up. I decided to just concentrate on the building seas...

I turned around and went with the wind till I got down to the channel leading back to hemmingways. Jigged the channel with no luck and then hit the two jetties. They are very shallow, 2-3 feet on my depthfinder which could mean up to 5 ft probably... Looked like a great white perch spot but I didn't have any tackle for that. Paddled around down to the cove area and then decided to head in as the sun set. Pretty fun evening playing in the rough surf and much needed after being on the road for a week.

I'm thinking of making another trip on Wednesday if anyone is interested.

Pretty impressive going out in those kinds of conditions. Here's the site I check for near real time wind and wave data:

                http://buoybay.org/site/public/

Click "explore buoy data" then click "most recent data". There's a buoy near the Bay Bridge. You can even make a graph of the data to see if there is an increasing or decreasing trend in the wind/wave data.

I use it for PLO so I don't waste time driving there if the wind is howling or there are waves stacked up.

Thanks, that's very helpful! At the time I felt pretty dumb to be out there with no other boats in those conditions... but I had my tether line, pdf, and my gear stored or lashed... so I said what the heck and went for a ride. Not something I would have felt as comfortable doing a year ago, but kind of enjoy it now. Reminded me of canoeing through the rapids last night, similar tactics.

Next time... I'm hoping for less wind. I think I'm heading out by boat by 301 tonight, we'll see.

Good luck at 301. Here's a link for real time conditions at the bridge. High tide should be around 3:10 PM. Looking forward to your catch report. http://www.chart.state.md.us/travInf...&Units=English

Thanks Bob. Last time out caught double digits but only got 2 keepers, 3 total for the boat. Hoping the rays are gone this time!

So would this be weather data for the Bay Bridge? http://www.chart.state.md.us/TravInf...&Units=English

That link says US 50 @ 301, I'm guessing they mean Bowie where the roads merge. Here's a link for Kent Narrows. http://www.chart.state.md.us/TravInf...&Units=English

I've been out there in those conditions it does make it for an interesting/fun ride just wouldn't be to fun to roll over. The boats have a terrible time because they are elevated off the water so they really get tossed around.( like a reversed pendulum effect)Kayaks are low profile so we just bob up and down with the wakes.Right after the toll booth the first thing I look for are the white caps no white caps good kayaking.

Where do you go when there are white caps? I was tempted to turn around and head back to Sandy Point bc it looked a little calmer over there, but I figured it was just because the bridge is higher there.

Also- no 301 trip for me today, my buddy called and said he trolled/casted all morning and didn't have a bite. Didn't have much hope for the afternoon tide. Rescheduled for next week.

when the wind blows from the west-northwest the chop really builds on the east side of the bay but the west side is usually a lot calmer. too bad the boat trip got canned, looks like a nice couple days coming up. going to head to the bull pen on AI this sat. nite. have to exercise the big rods and see if i can coax a drum or shark to take the bait
