I just recently moved up to Rockville from Calvert County, which puts me just a tad farther away from the big striper action this fall, but there's an upside. I've cut my commute down to about 1/4 of what it used to be, so I should have a ton more time. That being said, I haven't done much fishing on the Potomac, which happens to be in spitting distance of where I work at Carderock. I've ridden my bike on the canal tow path many times on different sections from Georgetown up to about White's Ferry, so I've been doing a bit of passive scouting over the years. There is some great scenery up past Great Falls and from what I hear smallmouths galore. The area near the legion bridge looks pretty nice as well. I have little experience bass fishing other than in farm ponds, but if anyone has any info they'd be willing to share regarding tactics for this time of year or productive areas or features to look for either in a kayak or wading the shorelines I'm all ears. I might have a chance to get out tomorrow afternoon or later this weekend so if anyone has plans feel free to shout them out.

I've fished the area around Brunswick /Lander (launch at either site) a good bit, as well as further upstream at Taylor's Landing.
At Taylor's I recommend fishing upstream. There are two ramps there, split by a ledge. About 2 miles upstream is Shepard's Island, the riffles usually hold a lot of fish, as do the deeper holes. My favorite is just below the island where the river rocks on the west Virginia side look like mounds of crumpled newspaper.
Best lures are tube jigs, curly tail jigs, broken back rebels/ rapalas, and poppers, when the water is warm. As it cools down, try crank baits, and heavier jigs.

Check the USGS gauge at Point of Rocks (USGS website). Anything much above 2.5 feet is a touch high.
