  • My 1st kayak road trip -- Any suggestions...

So here is my blog post about preparing for my upcoming 2 week road trip in November. I've listed what I think I need, but I would love to here some suggestions so I can be as prepared as possible for this trip of a lifetime.

Thanks for reading and for the help.

Dang, I typed up a packing list for my Virginia Beach trip this weekend and it much longer than yours. Maybe I need to rethink all that Im bringing, but I did list all of my tackle, baits and rigs.

Also dont forget sunblock, chapstick and your buff

They probably changed it this year since most likely 80% (or maybe even higher) of people that do any kind of saltwater fishing have caught puppy drum this year.

just wanted to say good luck, catch a lot of fish and post the video's when you get back. I have to fish thru you guys as I will not have the time to get out with work schedule being what it is right now. have you used that Yeti cooler? I have been looking at those and they seem pricey. Be interested in hearing your take on them vs some of the other coolers.

Good Call on the buff, and chapstick.... I don't use sunscreen anymore I hate it.... I just stick with the long pants, long sleeves, hats, shades, and buff.

My tackle is pretty organized so I'm gonna take what I have, then buy specifics for local fishing where ever I am.

Yeah I'm trying to pack minimally since I will need to know where everything is and organized in my car.

            Sounds like fun, enjoy!

Bring a toolbox in case you need to fix the yak.
Trash bags... you never know how you will use them.
            Wallet with fishing licenses.
            Shoes?
            Ropes / straps.

Dump the tuna cans, catch it yourself

I'm hoping it is a lifetime investment. I've had other coolers that break or suck, so the yeti is supposed to be durable and last a long time. yes they are expensive, but I'm home one yeti will be better than buying 4-5 to 6 coolers over the next 20 years.

I don't eat sushi, so the tuna is a quick easy meal.

Shoes yes!! Good call on the extra ropes and straps I had thought of that, but probably would have forgotten them.

Bags too, trash and ziploc if I do decide to keep fish.

Good luck Matt, should be an awesome time!

A few other things you may have thought about but will want to have are:
                    - flashlight/ headlamp
                    - light pole and flag for visibility

Not to be a worry wort, but depending on where you're going, weather, if you're alone, etc. you might want to assume that the worst weather, worst incident (like turning turtle) will happen on any given day. If it's an isolated area that you don't know, check in w/ the nearest Coast Guard station, just as you would with a Ranger station on a back pack trip in the wilderness. Ask them if there's anything you should be aware of, like shipping channels, restricted areas, etc. Have a plan and a way to contact them if you get in unexpected trouble.

I am sure you'll do this, but always check the latest weather, charts for coves to duck into, etc. I am wimp but it's from close calls in my youth that could have easily been avoided. The weather and the water can be unforgiving sometimes.
