Sewage pours into Little Patuxent River stem

A power outage at a Howard County water reclamation plant caused sewage to pour into the main stem of the Little Patuxent River at the rate of 2 million gallons per hour, according to the Associated Press.

Officials told the AP that the overflow started Monday night and, given the severity of the storm, no action had yet been taken to mitigate the damage.

This will all empty out into the Bay at the mouth of the Patuxent River, cold comfort but let's hope the cooler water temps will prevent algae blooms. I wouldn't go fishing in Jug Bay anytime soon.

I stopped by the Patuxent River at Savage Mill yesterday and walked up to the falls. It was blasted with tons of water. Whatever sewage was released into the river was thoroughly dilluted. It amazes me how fish can survive in such crazy conditions. I took a few photos and will post them at some point this week.

I think the water treatment station is down stream of savage mill, but not 100% sure...

Yup, the sewage plant is on the East side of Route 1. Probably a mile or two down river from Savage Mill. The plant is basically between Savage and the Russet neighborhood over by Walmart. There was a WHOLE lot of water going down the river for sure.

Yes, it is downstream just east of U.S. 1. The place to go to would be the Patuxent National Wildlife Preserve just east of BW Prkwy on Rt. 198. You 'd have to hike in to see the river there. There may be a closer access point by road on the south side.
