Best Time to Fish CCNPP

Hey guys-

Looking to try the discharge at Calvert Cliffs, but having never been there before and it being a long drive, I don't want to waste my time. Is there good action this time of year from guys that have worked it in boats or yaks? From what I understand the discharge can be quite a bit warmer than the ambient water (leading to good winter action) and with surface temps now near 50 degrees, I thought it may be worth a shot. Thanks!

Right now fish are scattered in schools around the Solomons/PLO and some north ......... the discharge can be good but usually better when it is really cold and striper season is closed ........... getting to it by yak can be difficult .......... best would be to use the Brady Bounds Taxi service .........

It's best in late Jan. and Feb. The current is wicked all by itself, so it's tough to fish from a yak. You have to drift through it from where it starts for several hundred yards, then paddle/pedal back and start over. That will give you 2 miinutes of jigging for every 15 minutes of paddling. The discharge is well offshore so any wind without west in it's name makes everything worse. Finally, it's a hard spot to get to with a kayak, there's no close place to launch.
The best thing you could do is watch Waleye Pete to announce a walk-on and jump on it. You'll catch fish and learn wether you really want to try it with your yak

This is where Brady Bounds Yak Taxi service comes into the best option. Load the yaks on the boat, transport to the Warm Water outlet, hop in the yak and fish .......... if the fish are there, you won't have to worry about the 2 minute jigging ....... you will have 1 every drift. Problem will most likely be jockeying with the other boats that rotate in the current ....... some can get aggressive if you screw up or get in the way ............

cool, sounds about on par with what I thought. I feel pretty comfortable in the outback and have put it through some pretty violent weather, and only intend to go when the wind is down--jigging gets so difficult with high winds anyway. I probably will stay away from taxi services for my own convenience, but was wondering about launch options. Flags Pond to the N and the State Park to the S are out as they have odd hours, but I am very curious about an area just to the North of the property line for the power plant. I circled it in the attached photo. If that is a publicly accessible area, I could tow the yak the short distance through the woods to the beach there, which is just across from the outflow. Wouldn't want to get too crazy being that it's a nuke plant of course; might just have to go investigate a bit.

There is an off-limits security zone in the water extending south starting at the far right edge of the beach (CFR 165.505) so I would have to steer clear of that, assuming I am even able to get into that roundabout area to park at all =)...if that doesn't work out I'll just pedal a couple miles down from the town to the North.

There are no launching options that I'm aware of .......... much of the area has cliffs or a long walk from parking to the beach etc. Others have tried to find a way without success if I remember correctly ........... let us know if you find 1 ............

The thing about weather is the predictability, the wind and waves come from the same direction. The discharges aren't like that, the whirlpools will grab you and spin you any which way. The Morgantown discharge is a baby compared to the cliffs and it gives me a real thrill just trying to cut through without going all the way around. Try Morgantown first if you're convinced you want to do a discharge. There are some nice fish in that area now.
