Looking for UL spinning combo

I'm looking to get my first UL rod for some pan/trout fishing. Plus I see a lot of people here us ULs on their yaks so I figure it'd be a good investment. I don't have a very large budget so I was looking at the BPS ULs combos.

I have a Fish Eagle 7 fT 4-6 lb. line rated UL spinning rod with Pflueger Supreme # 8225 spinning reel- 9 ball bearings, super smooth drag- really nice outfit, but pretty pricey- I have caught some pretty big fish on this outfit including a 20 inch rockfish and a 27 inch blue cat-

I fish much of the year with two 6 ft ultralight rods, and one 5'6" light rod. All are different brands that I bought at different times for different reasons, and all have a slightly different feel. One common feature among them is that even though they are thin rods, they are not super-bendy in the tip. A real wimpy rod is not going to serve you well if you cast all day.

You also want to match the weight of the reel to the weight of the rod. I use Shimano Stradic 1000 reels. They are not cheap, but they do perform well. If they are beyond your budget, look for other reels in that size range. To give an example of a severely mismatched pair, I pulled up a rod and reel from a shallow canal near the CBBT last summer. It was still very clean, so it had not been in the water very long. The rod was a Bass Pro Microlite Glass rod that was very flexible. You could just about bend it into a U shape. The previous owner put on a used Bass Pro reel in the 4000 size category. It was way overmatched for the light rod.

x2 shimano stradic 1000, not cheap but year over year durable and out performs everything I have. You won't regret the purchase. If you're looking for something cheaper a pflueger will do the trick..anything cheaper then that and it'll be a few season rod.. my 2 cents, good luck post some pics

Thanks gentlemen for the replies. The stradic looks nice, but definitely out of my price range. The reel I lost to Davey Jones' Locker was a pflueger, I really enjoyed that thing...I'll need to pay attention to the rod tips. I think the BPS rods were rated for lures up to 1/4oz, but they seem real bendy. I hope to go to BPS tomorrow and talk with BassMoore in person.

I use an www.overboardfishingrods.com ultralite paired with a shimano sahara. the rod floats with the reel so no more lost combos, might just be worth the little bit of extra money

I have a Shimano Sahara on one of my outfits as well. Works great, great price as well. Going on 3 seasons with it...

I got this one las year and its been on my yak for every trip. A little more than the ones you posted, but a little less than others suggestion i think... Pretty nice for a combo on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

The rod was a Bass Pro Microlite Glass rod that was very flexible. You could just about bend it into a U shape.

Have one and it has treated me well for almost ten years. Not a bad buy at about $20.

i got a 7 foot ugly stik intercoastal ultra lite with a shimano sahara . i put 10 pound power pro braid on it. that is by far my favorite rod and reel ever. it has the cork handle and it is pretty sensitive. its also pretty cheap 40 dollars for the rod . cant remember what the reel cost.

Check out the tourney series rods from bass pro. They are about $40? and have a nice crisp action which is hard to find in an UL. The st. croix premier's are also nice but far more pricey.

I went to bps today and talked with BassMoore. He is very nice and definitely very knowledgable! I am leaning towards the tiny lite, but will definitely check out the tourney series. I am also planning to buy the Browning combo that is going on sale this weekend so we'll see how much is left for the UL I'll know tomorrow during my lunch break
