  • Piney Run in Carroll County winter fishing

Does anybody fish Piney Run in Carroll county? Their web site says you can park outside of the gate this time of year since the park is closed. I'm wondering how far I would have to roll the yak to get to the water.

Google Earth measures it about 400 yards.

I've been there many times as part of my work. As I remember, from the gate its roughly 1,200 feet (4 football fields) to the ramps on blacktop park roads... and all down hill. Add a second set of wheels to your yak and you can go down soapbox derby style.

Oooops... rob beat me to it by minutes. But at least we both independently agree on the distance.

Just a heads up. Looks like no boating on that lake in the winter.

"Fishing is permitted from the shore line ONLY from November 1st thru March 15th each year."

Not to hijack this thread but in my opinion Maryland seems to be unreasonably over-restrictive with regulations on most of the Maryland Reservoirs. I have found that the DGIF managed lakes over in Virginia are much more angler friendly. They are open 24 x 7 and 365 days a year.

Keep in mind that Piney Run Park and lake are totally owned and managed by Carroll County Parks & Rec, not MD-DNR or fisheries. Same for Liberty, Loch Raven and Prettyboy Reservoirs which are owned and managed by Baltimore City. Maryland Fisheries does do fishery survey work for all these lakes in cooperations with their owners, but the operations of these lake are done exclusively by their respective owners.

Thanks for pointing out the no boating during winter rule, I'll cross Piney Run off of my list.

I agree with the comment about the local lakes being too restrictive. I would love to put my boat in at Loch Raven but:

                1) You have to get in line around 3:00 am the one day of the year that they sell open licenses and hope for the best

                2) You must sign an agreement that you will not use the boat in any other body of water

This is why I fish Loch Raven from the shore.

Yes, I knew that, did not intend to put the blame on DNR. Just seems most Maryland Reservoirs have similiar restrictions (no night fishing, no winter fishing, special permits required). Add Rocky Gorge, Tridelphia and Little Seneca Lake to the list of reservoirs with those kind of restrictions.

Talk to Balto City ........ they own Loch Raven, Liberty and Pretty boy. Soon after the Zebra Mussel scare of the Great Lakes, the drunk that was ahead of the DPW hires a whore of a consultant to say that the boats on the Reservoirs were a threat to bringing the Mussels to the reservoirs. For many years boats were banned on Liberty and Pretty Boy and only the rental boats were permitted on Loch Raven. We petitioned and met with them for years and finally got them to understand that a small open boat with electric engines were not a threat. They opened it up if you got a permit and signed papers that said you would only use your boat on those 3 reservoirs.

Carroll County owns and operates Piney Run. Washington operated Rocky Gorge and Tridelphia.

They all require permits. Only the Balto 3 makes you sign a paper.

Oh ....... and there are still no zebra mussels in any reservoir in MD ......... 30 years later.

                    Balto City Sucks.

U should be able to drop in anywhere. Permits are just to make money for the country and make it a hassle for everyone. You should be able to drop in anywhere like i said and just rinse the yak with freshwater before putting the yak in a different location.
