Just in case anyone is interested in
I am planning to head for CBBT on Sunday, Dec 30th, weather permitting
This will be my last bay striper fishing. I am fishing for stripers first (4-5 hours) and fish for specks later in ER (Elizabeth River).
I probably fish norfolk area for specks and redfish between Jan-Mar next year though
I expect the water temp will be 46-47F at CBBT 47-48F in ER.
I will be bringing for stripers:
6.5-7’ Medium Heavy rod (fast action)
20# super-braid with 3-6’ 20-30# test mono leader
Chartreuse 2oz jig with wide gap hook
Chartreuse 1.5oz jig with wide gap hook
Lead (no paint) 2oz jig with wide gap hook
Lead (no paint) 1.5 jig with wide gap hook
7” BA chartreuse rat-tail (pointy tail}
7” Zoom silver belly black (dark grey) back rat-tail (pointy tail
I found that (stripers)
Stripers’ bites became less assertive when the water temp dropped. I use the longer mono leader
The shapes of the jigs don’t matter too much, but the colors
Most of the necks of the jigs are too thick – the thick neck and barbs on the neck split the heads of the lures (destroying the lures). I sanded the barb and the neck or completely removed the neck. Sanding the neck or removing the neck was OK to hold the lure intact on the hooks
70% stripers have been caught when bottom bouncing.
For Specks:
6.5-7’ LIGHT, fast action rod
15# test super braid + 10+12# mono leader
Or 10# test mono. If you are using 10# test mono yowant to use 1/4oz jig
Bring a net
I no longer use MirroLure because loosing by snagging something on the bottom is too costly.
I took Redfishw12’s advice on the lures.
I will bring 1/8oz, 3/16oz and ΒΌ oz jig with WIDE gap hook
The color of the head are read or lead (no paint) for ER
You can use 5” paddle tail but I found that 3.5 – 4 inch paddle tail are most effective
Also skinny lures mare better than fat lures. After I cut off a strip of the belly of a fat lure, Specks were biting immediately the same lure missing a strip of belly
Day time: Salt and Pepper with pink or chartreuse paddle tails
At night: Dark lure – I took the Pinch’s advice. The one worked well for me was silver belly with dark grey back. Readfish12 were successful with dark grey/silver
