  • GoPro 3 Question

I am thinking about buying this camera. If you leave the video running continuously instead of trying to turn it off and on when you have a fish online, how long will it run? I know that it is dependent on the card size. What I am looking for is the normal card size that people use and the amount of video time available for that card.

I think it's more the battery. The Go Pro's seem to go thru batteries qiuckly and the reports I've read say the 3 takes even more power because of the Wifi. That said ...... it still gives a great picture ........ even surpasses the Vio Pov HD for the 1st time and it has the Wi Fi built in so you can control it with an Ipad. I'm referring to the 3 black

With one battery, my GoPro2, generally runs between 1.5 and 2 hours. With the extra battery pac it is near 4 hours run time. With any GoPro you will need accessories. If you are going to let it run on a mount you will need an extra battery pac. I also find the LCD bac pac a necessity, for when I use the camera as a hand held.

Don ......... the 3 Black has backlighting and Wi Fi built in that take more power as well as the increased pixels and frame rate ........... I've been told that it takes a bunch more power ....... not from experience though ........ been looking at them but I'll wait a little longer to see how they play out. Right now the 3 Black looks real good.

Do these cameras have a hand held switch of some type that you can activate when you start getting bites or want to start recording? I'm talking about a line running from the camera to an easy to reach spot next to you. That might be an option if you don't want to just have it running for hours just to catch a 30 second clip of a fish.

I have not heard much about the power drain. Without using one I do not know. We have the Silver Edition at the Store. I plan on buying the Black based on my experience with the Hero2, which was very good for me. I would recommend the extra battery pac. I just let my camera run during fishing and then toggle through the footage for edit. If I run past the 3 or 4 hours without any good sequence, I always have extra batteries. For me, if the fishing is that slow in 3 to 4 hours, then it generally remains slow. I generally start my cameras when I get to productive water and start trolling.

As for FrettR question, there is a button on the front that can manually start the camera, or it can be started by remote or WI-FI. There is no cable type of remote, as to my knowledge. As with any GoPro, there are accessories that you will need such as mounts, extra battery pac and possible an LCD back pac. You will have to run through the items a get what works for you. One thing that most will need is the adapter from regular camera mounting screw to the GoPro mount. These are available on Amazon. I found those to be very useful. I use a telescoping type arm mount, forgot the name. That way I can bring the camera in to me without much problem for batteries or otherwise.

Will it fit 3 or 4 hours of video on a single card?

                Taken from an online review
"The new model is smaller so the battery is smaller . That part is not good news. In continuous shooting I got just about 45 minutes before the battery went south. You can buy additional batteries and an optional battery pack that extends time but makes the camera about the size of the original Hero. That’s the way to go if size isn’t your main issue."

I guess the amount of video time on a card is dependent on the size of the card and the resolution and frame rate ........ haven't seen a chart yet. I don't have to be concerned about that with the Vio Pov because I just touch my remote button after the action is finished and it preserves the video loop that just occurred. That way I don't have to search through 3 hrs of video to find 30 seconds of action and I still get HD quality.

I have the Hero2. As Don mentioned, the single battery will get you almost 2 hrs of continuous footage on a 16mb card. Keep in mind that you can change the video quality, ie 720p, 1080p , and that will get you more video per MB. It won't help the battery life much if at all. I got a 32 mb card and the battery bacpac and that seems to extend the recording time right up to 4 hrs.
I can reach the camera from my seated position to turn it on and off. If I remember, I stop the recording sequence whenever I have just caught a fish. That makes editing a little easier. I just go to the end of each sequence and can easily find the "money" shots

The 2 and the 3Black are completely different .......... the black can record up to 45 frames/second and have higher resolution .......... but it does give an idea of what can be done

Here is a pretty good review of the Hero 3 Black. http://gizmodo.com/5959046/gopro-her...ss-fixer-upper That is not much difference from what I got with the Hero 2, maybe 15mins or so. I already used an extra battery pac. I also have the camera on a mount within reach, should I want to change batteries. This review does hit the battery life pretty hard.

Don ....... Dude ........ as usual, you came up with the best review ........

I was talking to Russ today and I never found the specs that showed the max card size ....... you did ......... again the best review ..........

but what does a micro 64gig over 15mbps transfer card cost ....... ain't cheap ....and where do you find it ....

but I still love the camera. Looks like it's pushing the available tech ....... I still have it on my wish list once all the questions are answered ..... will serve a great purpose ....... till it is proven, I'll keep the Vio povHD's ...... won't be long though ........ that cam is dope !!!!!!

                        Thanks Don

The last SD card that I bought was from Amazon. At the time they were more reasonable than local places and free shipping.
