Just spit balling a question, salt water fishing?

I have not had the opportunity to fish the Bay Bridge or other salt water areas you fellas fish. When i get the rare opportunity to fish from friends boats i use their rods because mine are rigged for fresh water...my question; if i was to get the opportunity to fish w some of you fellas, from my kayak, would you consider (with a cash deposit) to lend me a rod or two so i wouldnt have to re-spool all my stuff? Does the idea rub everyone/anyone the wrong way? generally speaking, i am a mid 40's adult male, professional, that has complete respect for the environment, other peoples stuff, etc..just a regular guy...thanks

Why don't you just buy some .......... there's fleamarkets coming up and there are rods on the buy and sell board pretty cheap .........

Why would you need to re-spool your stuff to fish in SW? I use all my rods in both fresh and salt. Just give them a good spraying after salting them.

I need more rods, like a need another hole in the head. I would hate to buy/set-up rods strictly for salt water use when odds are i would use them 1/year.

In reply to Chexone in using my regular rods i spool exetremely light line on all my rods. I dont have anything greater than 10lb test. I like finesse fishing for bass and if they arent biting i use the same rods for pan fish, perch, etc. with smaller jigs/lures/live bait.

Most of the rods we use are the same 1's that are used for bass fishing ...Mag Bass type ..... 6 or 7 ft up to a 12-20 rated 3/8 to 1 1/2 oz lure ....... 844 or 845 blank for jigging and livelining ....10 lb and up braid .... heavier stuff for Tog and maybe spades if the spades are large ........ these are basically the light Musky stuff ..........

or just the heavier ugly sticks ...........

but someone will probably rent you 1 but the cost would probably be the same or more than buying a used 1

I was catching 30" stripers on a medium action rod and 10 lb test, no prob.
I also use the same rods in fresh as in salt.
Heck, we were also catching nearly 30" steelhead on 6 lb test and noodle rods.

Personally I don't like lending my rods but others may have no problem.

I agree with the others but I have multiple rods that I use for both SW and FW only I wash the reels down with water after SW fishing but I to am always looking for new tackle. Whens the next flea market anyone know?

SurfDog told me that there is a Kent Island fishing flea market this Saturday and there is the Tri-State flea market next Saturday.

I have rods and reels that are forty (+) years old- (my Dad's fly rod is seventy years old)- good quality equipment will last forever with proper maintenance- I don't fish any heavy equipment from a kayak- can't put that much pressure on a fish anyway- something will break, pull out, etc. I doubt if anyone here has their drag set at 10 (+) pounds by a spring scale- a good bend in the rod to keep steady pressure will pull a kayak around- Beach fishing is different- you need heavier tackle fishing from the shore than from a kayak- your light tackle will work just fine- just rinse and spray it down with a good water displacement spray like WD-20 and wipe it off

kevinfry - thank you for the offer. your terms are acceptable. i hope to have the opportunity to take you up on them. while i am confident my gear would hold up to salt water i am more concerned about the ability of my lines to hold up. When i do get the rare opportunity to fish from associates boats, their rods are spooled with braid and have heavier test leaders. FYI, you take your coffee and 1/4lb'ers just like me.

well often that heavy gear is more about how they fish than where they fish and what they fish for. We (kayak-ers) rarely troll umbrella rigs or fish with 6oz jigs or croaker fish in 40 ft of water. We certainly don't troll 7-10 knots for Spanish mackerel. If you fish with baitcasters, re-spooling is your only option. Of course if you have spinning gear, extra spools with power pro are cheap and a click-click change. For many reels they cost just a few cups of coffee/quarterpounders.

The few times i have been out on the bay we jigged 1oz +/- bucktails & swim/jerk bait style lures for stripers and blues on spinning rods. I only trolled once and that was on a charter...which i didnt enjoy...the deck hands did nearly everything, from casting to hook setting, then they handed us the rods...pretty lame actually. The rods were similar to what i use but the reels were larger...the line was definately heavier than what i have spooled. I do use baitcasters for LM.

Thanks for the compliment on the Big Tuna, it is my first kayak and i absolutely love it...dont see a scenario where i will part with it. This past 24 months have been tough financially and i have sold all other "toys" except the yak...including two Harleys and a BMW Z4 convertible so you can see how much she means to me.
