ceramic is much more heat resistant (It is what the Space shuttle tiles are made of) than regular drag materials- ceramic brake pads are used on Indy Race cars"Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS

This is actually an interesting question, so I did some research.
Do you mean fishing reels with ceramic bearings and ceramic drags? I found a lot of info on ceramic bearings in fishing reels. Here's what I found:
- The balls and sometimes the races in bearings for reels are ceramic or ceramic coated
- Ceramic bearings (CB) costs more to produce than stainless steel (SS) bearings
- CBs are less prone to corrosion
- CBs are harder than SS bearings, so there's less friction and less wear (lasts longer)
- CBs are smoother
- CBs generate less heat
- CBs are less prone to rotational vibration; can operate at higher speeds
Same ideas apply to ceramic drags - less heat, no corrosion, lasts longer, etc.Last edited by tufnik; 03-08-2013, 08:23 PM.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

My cabo's have ceramic drags. In their case Quantum means hard fiber disks vs felt washers or other drag materials. As Ron said, ceramic is more tolerant to heat which makes it a good choice for drag washers. Are they really ceramic? No probably not, just like the TLDs are not actually titanium. Cabos are nice reels, a little heavy, but solid.Used to fish more.

Ceramic washers are quite thin and brittle. They are more expensive than carbon fiber material, which are already very good material for drags.
Also, I checked, and found out my Quantum Tour Edition TE baitcaster has a ceramic drag system.....didn't know that.....duh....Last edited by tufnik; 03-08-2013, 08:42 PM.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

I used ceramic inserts in my machine tooling to cut extremely hard metals when I worked as an inside machinists- titanium, high carbon steel, 17-4PH heat treatable stainless steel, cast iron, etc."Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS
