  • Lowrance elite 5 dsi/ pro angler 12/14 2013

so ive asked before and come to this conclusion: to have the down scan imaging (Elite 5 DSI), im gonna need to put the transducer OUTSIDE the yak and not use the thru hull the Pro Angler comes Lowrance ready for......hence needing to mount a Madfrog Liberator for the transducer.....and this WILL WORK........

ok so hows that, have i learned anything or am i still a complete dummy about the whole situation?.....be gentle....thanx for any help

I have a dsi elite 5 and I shoot through the hull of my outback. Zero problems and interference. I would use the setup the pro angler comes with.

Just passing along info I received as I have no personal experience...

I recently got a used Lowrance Elite 4 DSI from a relative and had a question if the DSI would work shooting thru the hull of my kayak or if the transducer needs to be in the water (from what I have read thus far, there is no sonar option on this model, only DSI). They replied that some anglers have had success shooting thru the hull but don't recommend it as they have not figured out why some "thru the hull" method works for some but not for others. The guy I spoke to mentioned that it could be associated to the thickness, flatness, location, etc of where the transducer is placed in the hull as well as the material of kayak.

I have a Humminbird 587ci HD DI Combo (Down imaging and sonar) and I first started off with a side mount (in the water) and obviously it worked well (just too much drag for my liking). I then switched it to through the hull (wet well) to test it out and I got the same quality image I was getting in the water. I agree with Financeguru above that issues that people are having ...

So, here is my dumb question for the day: You can shoot the DI and sonar THROUGH the plastic kayak???

Yes there are different ways to attach the transducer for sonar inside the kayak to shoot through the hull. I myself use the wet duct-seal method which Mustafa is referring to. Or you could go with the GOOP method. However I am not sure about the DI, but from looking at Mustafa's post I would asume so.

I have the same Elite 5 dsi Gold setup on my Outback and use the mad frog liberator mini mount to put the transducer in contact with the water- the transducer is always in the water so I know that the images on the display is the way it is supposed to be - as well as displaying the correct water temp- I haven't noticed any drag at all with the tiny streamlined transducer and the mad frog mount is small, sturdy, unobtrusive and quickly deploys- I chose this option of mounting my transducer after using the wet well duct seal system for several years without any noticeable issues- I just wasn't 100% sure the sensitivity was there shooting through the hull and that the water temps were slow to get accurate due to the insulating effects of the plastic hull

As far as the Humminbird transducer (I'm told the Lowrance DSI transducer looks different, but I have no idea) is concerned, my experience points to yes. Like Ron said, you lose out on accurate temperature reading through the hull. I'm told it takes a while and eventually reads it properly. That hasn't been a deal breaker for me since I usually have the screen that shows both sonar and DI at the same time which allows me to verify what I'm seeing through both views (this screen doesn't have the temperature reading). There are advantages and disadvantages to any setup. Pick the one that works for your needs.
