  • Compared Go Pro to a Tough Camera

Ive been doing lots of research latley on these two different Cameras, and have realized that the go pro has the advantage in how it can mount to a helmet and or chest wrap.

The tough camera however, the Panasonic in general BLOWS the go pro out of the water.

The tough camera has 16.1 mega pixles with 5.9 zoom and 9.3x intelligent zoom

    takes 1920x1080p video

has gps , and wifi capable with cell phones. U can snap the picture and see whats on the camera on your phone.

last i heard this battery will shoot video for 8 hours before a charge

now here gets the good part.
    waterproof to 43 feet
you can drop from 7 feet, its shock proof
it can last in 14 degree weather when wet
and can be crushed up to 220lbs without breaking

im sure the go pro can handle some of these feats... but picture and video quality out these tough cameras are far superior.

and they are capable with any video editing software.

and these 2 units run the same exact price.

what are some opinions on this?

are people willing to go away from whats believed to be the best... its kinda like an iphone.. claim they are the best... but are they... i need some ideas!??!

      Zack,
Since none is responding, let me start.

First of all take time before you purchase any camera.
I am extremely busy so I can't describe what I learned about kayak-fishing video.
Anyway I assume you are talking about Panasonic Lumix TS5 Rugged Waterproof Camera.

I can discuss more from this coming Friday, but shortly:

      1. I don't know why GoPro became popular to kayak-anglers.
      2. GoPro is god for the sports if you know the start and end times of the event, such as snowboarding, skiing, and surf-boarding.
      3. Fishing - no starting time is pre-determined.
      4. I pissed off many people by asking this, but I will say it again. Ask them how long they had a water-proof cameras, and how many kayak-fishing videos have been produced. The answers will tell the truth about the kayak-fishing video produced by an actual kayaker. The worst of all, ask how many of videos weren't compilation of multi-day trips.

      5. GoPro is not good for "Point and shoot" application. Once I put the water resistant housing on, it is hard to see the screen (with LCD screen backpack). It gets worse underwater. While free-diving, I wasted valuable seconds to point the objects. I traveled with friends who owned both GoPro2 and other $300.00 + dollar cameras (Olympus, Nikon -33' under water). None used GoPro in pool and beach. I was the only one used GoPro. The video of GoPro is distorted. which is no-no if you aren't shooting snow-boarding activities. Gopro inside the water resistant housing barely record sound.

GOPro and My 720p Olympus don't perform under low light. Though I carried the Olympus in low light (Cave and underwater ). But Nikon performed well underwater and low light

      6. I mounted GoPro on my speargun. That is what it will be used for - one purpose
      7. I am buying a regular camera and underwater housing for free-diving/scuba diving. I broke one Olympus by going deeper than 33' while free-diving. But if you have no intension of using the camera below 33' deep you are OK.

      8. You may still need a hand-held camera
      9. If you want take a photo of fish, there are a lot of $100+ water proof cameras

I will come back and check the thread on Friday

      Thanks
      joe

Don't you have a similar camera? I recall one of your later videos fishing some river. I thought the vid was pretty good.

                Tufnik,

Mine is similar in form. I've seen and read great reviews of this Sony camera as of late. I am 100% satisfied with both of my Contour+'s, but I really like what I see/hear of the Sony as well.
