The weather report, says that SPSP marine report is:

If you are a beginner, I suggest that you do not go out into open water that is deeper than you can stand when the waves are more than 1 ft. Once you gain confidence and experience with your equipment you can handle more extreme conditions.

In the mean time, look for a more sheltered location when fishing on a windy day. For example, see http://www.snaggedline.com/showthrea...attawoman-4-22. Mattawoman is much more sheltered with shorelines within 50 yds from most places.

      Ditto. For newbie - it's a no-go. No rush...wait for better conditions.

Will do!! Thanks so much for the pointers!! I'll wait until the weather dies down....

I'd think that East or West wind is better, correct? Also, what wind speed and/or eave height is suitable??

        Thanks!!

        Best Regards,

Ideally, I would think you'd want conditions such that it's in your favor when you're way out there, after you've spent some time exerting yourself, and you're ready to come in. You may not want to fight the weather too much to come in when you're done fishing.

You want fairly comfortable conditions so you can learn the mechanics of fishing. You know, going through the motions. Examples: Watch for passing boats making sure they see you, watch for rogue waves that could tip you, turn around and get tackle to re-rig your pole, make sure your equipment is secure and where you want it to be located (cause you'll probably later reconfigure your rigging set-up as you learn the ropes), assess your physical limits on how far you can go and how well you can face faster current and bigger waves. As you progress, learn how you can maneuver your yak in 2+ foot chops, big swells and higher winds. Learn the basics until it's instinctive. When you feel comfortable, then you can start venturing into rougher conditions. Keep in mind, rough wx conditions can surprise you. You may also want to practice self-rescue at some point in time if you haven't done it already.

Another suggestion: Try to go out with others (e.g., MKF M&Gs) as much as you can. That's part of how I learned and increased my confidence in open water.

I'd say that's not safe for anybody, newbie or not. The current can be very bizarre around the BB. Add to that waves bouncing off piling walls and you can easily get in a wet situation. Wait for a calm day... 5mph winds.

Saturday looks like a nice day to venture out to the Bay Bridge, if the forecast holds http://grab.by/lWYQ

2-3 ft waves are already no fun. 4 ft will wipe you out if you don't pay attention.
