Panfishing - Current MD State Record bluegill

I was checking out some Deep Creek websites...considering paddling there soon and came across this story from '99. The current state record blue gill...i have caught several citation gills there but i love the look of this freak. Just thought i would share.

I wonder if he kept they crappie? I think i know that place he is fishing and have fished it.

I'm guessing yes. Since the article says he was within 1/2 oz of the record. I'd think it'd be pretty hard to get that accurate with a lively fish. It's kinda sad that to get a record you have to keep it so that it can be officially weighed.

I was trying to figure out where he was since I'm fairly new to cecil county and always looking for new places to try. Care to share where you think it was? PMs are cool and I don't even care if it's "right" just looking for new places.

MD-DNR had a mount made of that bluegill. They have frequently put it on display at booths they set up at various fishing show. It is truly a beast of a bluegill. Deep Creek Lake is perhaps the best place in MD to consistently catch very nice sized bluegills.

I have caught a couple of huge bluegills out of DCL. They hang out in groups. If you can happen onto a school of them you can have a blast. Summertime at DCL they usually hang out on weedbed edges in 10-12 feet of water.

If I’m correct its a private lake in colora. He’s fishing on a island. It looks way to familiar. I have pictures that I will dig up this weekend of largemouth and bluegill. I had a few buddies back in high school that lived on that property and we would fish it allot! Its been about 7 or 8 years ago. It refers to it as a lake but I’m not really familiar with to many lakes in cecil.lol a pond with water coming in and leaving I assume. I stopped at herbs in north east and saw a guy come in with a crappie bigger than that caught at ne park. He was going to check it but herbs was closed, winter hours. this was back in February.
