My message to kayak fishing noobs and those that just what specific spots...

Fish migrate- honey holes are seasonal- and fish only bite under certain conditions- trying to find the right combination is what separates the successful from the skunks- fishing a honey hole at the wrong time results in a total skunk- you would think someone lied to you about it being a "honey hole"- I went to one of my favorite places yesterday afternoon- caught lots of keepers here before- hooked up almost immediately- big smile- I just knew it was going to be epic...then I was on to foul hooked rays- huge pods of large cow nose rays were swimming around in circles- every where- so much for an epic afternoon of fish catching- got to be there when the fish are there and the fish are hitting- that means you have to fish a LOT- hit or miss, going just once a month means a lot of missed opportunities and if you expect to win the lottery every game drawing you are going to be disappointed-

MYT laid it on the line- couldn't add one thing better- and I have fished with a couple of different kayak guides and I pick up things from every one- put in your time, learn- not everyone is going to share what they know....until they get to know you and they TRUST you.

The only thing I would add, is don't take things too seriously. Fishing is supposed to be fun.

One of the best things that I have ever done is to wade fish flowing water, rivers and streams. I learned how to fish the eddies and currents, as to where the fish are holding. If you then magnify that knowledge in macro affect, to the larger creeks, rivers and bays, you will find the fish in the same current and eddy type areas. Study charts, and you will figure out those currents, depending on the tide. You will find your own hot spots. Also, remember to keep a journal, as to conditions, barometer, tide, weather, moon phase, etc, etc. You can make your own or use a commercially printed one. You can then go back and put a pattern together.

I agree with everything everyone has said thus far in the thread. However, I have seen reports posted before where the poster explicitly states they don't even want to offer a general location. I don't agree with that and think you should offer at least that, time and date otherwise you're pretty much just using it to brag.

Great advice added guys! I don't know how I forgot to add have fun in there... LOL Bass you bring up a great point too! Every type of fishing isn't for everyone! CONFIDENCE in the lure your fishing can be all the difference! It's like the fish know when you don't believe in the lure! LOL I've fished the same method as other people that were killing them right beside me and I didn't catch anything. So I swapped out for my "go to" lure and started hooking up! LOL There is no right or wrong way just go with what you know and are confident in. You can still try other methods, but don't be afraid to switch if it's not working! LOL

Dave, I have seen some people like that as well. And what can you do? LOL I can't speak for everyone on the board, but I would say that most of the guys wouldn't mind giving up the general info. I would urge that when we make posts that we add the general location even if it's vague like Eastern bay, or upper Severn. That still leaves a lot of water to fish and find them... but at least you have a good idea. I don't mind giving up my holes most time that I have found. But if someone shares a spot that they would like me to keep quiet, I will respect that. And I can understand it. So in some of my posts I might be a little more general.

Couldnt agree more on the general locations. This will help guys like me with the simple things; Fishing Location Name (and nicknames) = <insert map location here>. Put ins for your boat here and here are great for XYZ location. Basic stuff like this for a guy (like me) that doesnt even have this level of info would be AWESOME.

Please post your overall impression of the guided fishing "trip". I would be very interested to hear about it. I have considered doing that myself, but have not yet looked into it. I have only had my kayak a couple of months and I am still getting it rigged the way I want it.

I'm going out with a kayak fishing guide this weekend. I am actually more eager about learning techiques and fishing tactics than I am to actually catch fish...

I have used guides when I am traveling not so much because I need them to teach me how to catch fish- but to have the use of a kayak and someone to go fishing with- they suggest lures/baits that the local fish are feeding on, but short of hiring a guide or taking a charter- go to any fishing location and sit down with a good pair of binoculars (I like my Nikon Monarchs) and just see what the fishermen are doing- doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out pretty quickly-

I agree with everything MYT said. I have mentioned this before, but I call this site SnaggedLine University. Everyone is always helpful, friendly and willing to share "information", (not exact honey hole locations), to help one become a better Angler and to understand how to catch the fish that they are targeting. I have learned a lot from this forum, that is why it is my favorite. I love the forum's kayak fishing community.

Please post your overall impression of the guided fishing "trip". I would be very interested to hear about it. I have considered doing that myself, but have not yet looked into it. I have only had my kayak a couple of months and I am still getting it rigged the way I want it.

I definitely will. This trip is gonna be down in the VA Beach area.

What could be more exciting or rewarding than learning new techniques to catch fish. I am in total agreement with Mytmouse. As for sharing locations... I am not a native to this area and after twenty years of being here, I am still learning the names of locations and well where they are. So for this reason I DO ASK. I appreciate it when you guys explain it to me; other than that...I don't care if I don't catch fish. I just love being able TO FISH. It's kind of like the lottery but it comes with better odds but if you expect to win, you won't! Take your time and learn your own way. Be safe. Have fun. Tag along.

I don't think thats a fair statement to tell others what to do. I just don't see the point of posting a report without offering a general location, time and maybe what you were fishing with. What I mean by general location is the body of water (susky flats, point lookout, weems creek, sandy point etc.) Not saying to include the coordinates but if everyone's reports were to the affect of "Here's some rockfish I caught yesterday but I'm not even going to say where or what I caught it on" I bet that would get on everyone's nerves real quick and the reports would stop coming in.
