  • First post, hello everyone

Hello I'm Ezekiel or EZ, I got My kayak last year and have been practicing since. I started at pennyfield, riley's lock, mouth of monocacy and then moved to some local lakes such as Tridelphia, I used to catch loads of crappie there with live minnows but I'm trying to switch to plastics since they are easier to handle in a kayak. I heard there are walleye in the potomac, someone told Me I could put the kayak at brunswick and catch them there but I think the current is just too strong for a kayak there or maybe I need more experience.
Anyways, thanks to everyone for the good information, I've been lurking here for some time.

    EZ,
I told you on Tidalfish that the water level on the Potomac was too high. I'm sure that the water level was in the caution/danger level at the ramp. Please be careful out there!
The current really rips just outside of the Brunswick ramp, but once you clear it at lower levels you should be fine. There are some deeper holes upstream of the Brunswick Bridge. You'll have to paddle up past the big island on the Virginia side.
Honestly, that stretch is better for smallies. If you want a good shot at walleyes, your best bet is below dam 4 or upstream from Taylor's Landing. But you have to wait for the river level to come down! Way down!
Under lower, summertime flows-water level below 1.75 feet at the Point of Rocks USGS gauge you should be fine.
Get on the USGS website and check the water level every time that you go out! If it's over 2.5 find some place else to fish!

I know I remember Your reply, thank You. I did check the website You posted and it is much higher than 1.75 for sure. I saw a few boats take off after I tried and they were having a workout to get out of the canal and into the river it is a little strech so they reved the engines hard then turn fast and oposite the river current, I had to do that with a kaya paddle, fun but a little dangerous for My taste. I was laughing at the same time thinking how the heck am I going to cast if I have to hang on to the paddle for dear life. Good thing I always wear pfd. I thought since most here kayak fish, it is easier to find fishable spots.

EZ, use this to track the flow in the Potomac. Potomac River Flow

I live in Washington County and we do floats some times, if you want to tag alone. You have to be patient with fishing the Potomac. Fishing in high water can be rough, frustrating and sometimes dangerous. Sometimes when the water is high in the Potomac you need to fish lakes, ponds or the Tidal Potomac or bay. Ditto on the good advice given on the Potomac thus far.

Thank You for the words of advise and welcome. I'm planning a visit to tridelphia reservoir maybe next week or soon after, I used to fish this lake for crappie with live minnows and now I'd like to try My new found Mr crappie plastics.

Get some trout magnets and you will catch all the crappie you can

The problem for Me now is that I'm learning how to 'work' this plastics and I'm doing it by myself so it takes time for Me to understand where to cast them and how to 'work' them.
