  • New to it all !!! Lol

Like the title says, I'm new to this kayak fishing thing. Getting tired of fishing off piers and river banks so I said what the hell lets try kayak fishing. Lol I'm in the middle of a trading for a like new Old Town Vapor 12xt angler. Looks good but does it work? Does anyboyd have one ? How is it? To big to small etc thanks.
I live in southern Maryland - north beach and was wondering if there was any good fishing spots local. Anybody willing to let me tag along a few times to get my feet wet? Thanks in advance

Most of us use sit on tops but a few use sit insides. Those with sit insides catch plenty of fish and some are in So. Md too (several use Pungoes). The vapor is light and should be a great boat. I am in St Mary's co. if you are close send me an IM

I have a 9.5ft feather lite "sit in" I like to take to places I can't take a heavy bulky kayak. By that I mean carrying the yak 100yrds or more on my shoulder thru the woods kinda crap. I think that yak will be fine, once u get into the sport and realize u need something else or want something with more features you'll most likely want to change up. And if u ask any anal they will tell u there favorite type of yak is the only thing you'll ever need. But I take my yak which is like the old town you have down rivers, big lakes, small ponds, and small tidal creeks and some big tidal rivers. If anything it will keep you drier and u can keep your gear inside with u. I say just get it and see how you personally like it.

PFD- Safety first- get used to the kayak in sheltered waters in a safe environment and get comfortable with getting in and out of your kayak before venturing into the "deep" end- if possible go with an experienced kayaker who can show you the ropes- that is what I did and I met these friends right here on this forum-

As someone that is new to this as well I can confirm the importance of getting used to fishing from a kayak in smaller/protected bodies of water before heading out deep. Everything is new(to an extent) once you're bobbing around out there-casting, tying knots...

Welcome. Check out the next meet and greet. There will be plenty of kayakers there. Mattawoman is protected, calm waters.

North beach..... I rock a wilderness systems 14.5' tandem sit-in singlehanded

OK, here some good launches, sorted by distance, with remarks:

Fishing Creek Marina (by the waterpark) $5 to hand-launch, bay access, but for a beguinner just head up the creek on a flood tide ... Seen Carp, there is a recorded snakehead catch, catfish, plentyfull crabs (although live crabs in a sit-in 'yak isn't my scene)

Rose Haven, free - hand launch only, limited parking, on the right on Walnut just after the second big curve heading out of N beach. The little cove there is good for playing around, but mostly its smooth access to open bay. Check weather first, if there are north or south winds and waves >1ft then it's not going to be fun for a true novice. Perch, and Spot, and lots of contacts on the FF near the navigation marks. My luck there targeting the bigger stuff has been non-existant. Going to try live lining some of those spot tomarrow.

Lower Marlboro fishing peir - free-hand launch, but not "really" a launch point, Lower marlboro rd till it ends, highly protected waters, should be catfish but I've only used it as a bailout for RH/FC and not been properly equipped to catch what's there

Kings Landing SP - Free, hand launch with a bit of a portage, protected waters, go up the side creeks on a flooding tide for catfish...

Benedict, free, Hughsvill-PF rd, under the drawbridge. Croaker, weakfish, spot, protected water, Fish the bridge pilings, and there's a steamship wreck just off the ramp.
              Chesapeake Beach Bum.

What type of baits and rigs are y'all using. I'm used to fishing piers so im not educated on jigs and rigs. Bought some spinners to try and catch bass and snake heads. Any other rigs I need to buy? Not a very good bass fisherman either lol

Rapala crankbaits in firetiger seem to work pretty good for me- real target frogs and soft plastics can produce if you work them correctly-

I think these are two of the easiest and most effective light tackle lures to use in the Bay and its tributaries:

                        1. A curly tail soft plastic grub on a jig attached to a jig spinner. 1/8 oz. and ¼ oz. jig heads work well for white perch and small rock. I put 4” grubs on them. I prefer chartreuse grubs and nickel spinners but when fish are present almost any color combo will work.

                        2. Rat-L-Trap lures in 1/2 oz. and ¼ oz. are good hard-sided baits that you can troll or cast from your kayak. Rock and large white perch will hit them. I like silver, yellow and those in blue and silver.

I cast both lure types with spinning rods.

Good luck in your new kayak.

for out in the bay and tidal potomac fishing for rockfish, trout, blue fish, etc....you can't go wrong trolling xraps, bass assasin salty shad, gulp swimming mullet and small tony spoons (pics of each in same order below). For fishing the bottom for croaker, spot and pearch...nearly everyone uses high lo rigs with kahle or circle hooks and some kind of bait (fake bloodworm, worms, shrimp, sometimes squid). When you get more experience you can branch out from there.
