When I fished at Jamaica Bay, NY, several weeks ago during the tournament I referred to it as "flounder" when talking to this local fisherman. He promptly told me it's "fluke," and that there is a difference. He said fluke has a slightly different body shape, larger mouth and bigger teeth. I just said, "OK, cool."

From what iknow, flounder is a variety or group of flat fish, but summer flounder is also known as fluke.

I will be there in OC on Friday morning. I wanted to go on Thursday but after starting a new FT job in retail I didn't want to chance it... Russ, I will be sending a PM for you so check it if you can. I am ok with fishing out of the Marina on the western side of the rt 50 bridge. I think its where many of you went out of last year or the year before. I want to fish the inlet with another crazy fool... Anyone up for a challenge? Not sure how long I can stay and play especially if its a rough current. Anyone up for Friday morning or afternoon/evening? I may do the bridge for some blues. I was there 3 weeks ago and they were hitting Gotcha Plugs on the incoming and outgoing tide. I also found a NICE hole that can be reached from the Bridge or from a Yak. Weather looks good for the entire weekend. Mild spotted showers could pop up as they normally do. Anyone want to do Chrisfield while we are in the area on Friday? If anyone wants to fish at night, I strongly suggest you have plenty of light onboard. It can be a bit nasty at night in the inlet area. I also have a favorite spot near the rt 90 Bridge. Big hole on the North side of the rt 90 bridge after launching at the park near the bridge located in North OC near 50th street or thereabouts.

I will also attend the lunch. I'm down with Friday if anyone wants to fish Friday as well. Tides and fishing info can be found on the Coastal Fisherman website. The last page of the hard copy has the tides for the OC Inlet These are at alltackle and other area tackle shops in OC. Please PM Me if anyone wants to meet up on Friday afternoon or night. Not sure what time I will be arriving on Friday morning.

Actually, while that may be true assessment of the summer flounder, what makes a flat fish a flounder or fluke is which side of its head is facing up. See quote from reluctant gourmet website....many other sources too.

"All Fluke Are Flounder but Not All Flounder Are Fluke

Generally speaking, left-side up flounder are flukes, and right-side up flounders are called flounders. That sounds easy enough to remember, but it gets worse. Flukes are also called "summer flounder," and flounder, or right-side fish, are called "winter flounder."

It also turns out that, of the 500 plus flatfish species, there are five species that are all called flounder. It's good to know that there is a difference, but I would be hard pressed to taste the difference between a fluke or a flounder.

Four of the five flounder species are found in the Atlantic: summer flounder (left-side up flukes), winter flounder, southern flounder and European flounder. The fifth, the Japanese flounder, is found in the Pacific Ocean.

Unless you are studying fish biology, and I'm certainly not, I think the main thing to remember is that all flukes are flounders but not all flounders are flukes. And all flounder is tasty."
