  • Need 2 kayaks for newbs

Looking for ideas for 2 kayaks for beginners. My GF and her 19 year old son. unfortunately her son doesnt like to fish but i'm working on him.
I need to TRY to keep the price under $1000 for both or even less if possible. I'd prefer SOT's and at least one of them setup for fishing for her.

I've had a hobie outback for over 2 years now and its only been in the water 3 times including today. I was actually thinking about selling it since i never use it. My GF's sister and brother in law bought some ascend SIT's a few weeks ago and today we all got together at their mothers shore home and did some kayaking, paddle boating and jet ski'ing. My GF and her son loved being out in the yaks and now want to get some and now I can finally get some time out on the outback instead of burning 100's of gallons of fuel a month on the power boat.

We'll probably be sticking to calm waters in the rivers and creeks so I figure they will be fine with 10 footers. The ascends they were in today are 10's and they seemed to do just fine. Probably should lean towards more stability than speed for them as well.

I know you get what you pay for but just wondering what brands and models would be good (and cheap) for fishing and some sight seeing cruises??
Prefer to buy new and put it on the card but if anyone knows of some good used deals I'm also interested.

    Thanks

I looked at that one and its definately a good price. I think 10 footers will be better for them and that one is almost as heavy as my outback.

Trying to keep the price down my GF has a couple she is interested in.

            The emotion renegade XT

            and the Ascend D10 SOT
            http://www.basspro.com/Ascend-D10T-S...2102505321113/

I'm trying to talk her into moving up to something I feel is a little better.

I know I like haveing my hatch right between my legs on the outback and the pescador 10 looks to have room there to add one.

I also really like the new Moken 10 lite.

I have the Perception Pescadora... I like it.. keep in mind this type of kayak is slower than your
longer kayaks. But it tracks well... I am about 190-200 pounds. A lighter person it should go
through the water quicker. The area where I think you want to put a hatch is a hump... not
sure just how east it would be as far as flush mounting is concerned.

The combination at Austin (paddle and vest) is how I got mine. The paddle I got is not that
great... I purchased a better paddle... although the paddle in the picture looks better than
the stock one I got. Dick's has paddles for about $40 that look decent enough.

You can see some picks of my kayak in my profile here.. the yellow box behind the seat
is a kittylitter box... fits quite nicely there.

That seat on the Molten 10 looks dreamy soft. The seat on the Pescadora is fine...
although I am looking for some sort of cushion for my +6 hour days.

You're doing a good job or researching. I am sure this thread will help others.

If you are at Dick's and the kayak is not on the floor see if you can get some sort
of deal on shipping by doing a "ship to store." They do it on some products.
I ended up getting mine at Sports Authority because Dick's didn't have it on hand
and they were going to charge me something like $150 for shipping.
              R.

              added some notes:
The Emotion Renegade looks to have lots on nice compartments to put stuff.
The "cockpit" floor looks flat... sort of like sitting on a flat floor.

The Pescadora "hump" previously mentioned does allow for the cockpit to have a more
ergonomic fit... ie: you are not sitting on a flat floor.

                .
Actually the flat floor is what I was worried about on the Ascend D10. Looks like your feet would actually be sticking up higher than the sides of the kayak.

West Marine has the Pompano 120 SOT on sale for $424. Its on the web site. I know the Annapolis, Hillsmere Dr., store has 4 in stock. It is very similar to the Pescador. The Pompano 12 is based on the Tarpon 120. I understand that Wilderness owns the company that makes the Pompano 120 for West Marine. It may be worth a look.

                  Good luck.

I juts picked up a Pampan0 120 from West marine. It is a decent kayak.A proven hull design with some nice features like rod holders and anchor trolley built in. At about $500 you can't beat it.

That looks like a very similar hull as the Pescador... the price is good.. I just saw it online for $399..
also, which is nice about the interior of the hule is that it has the tracks as opposed to the hule type
foot rests. The extra space for your legs is something I had not considered when I purchased my Pescador.
                      Definite bonus.

That may be correct. A new kayak sale just started.

I have the regular Moken 10 and it's great. It's very stable, I can stand and paddle/cast but I am a smaller guy. Great storage, tracks well, decent speed. Wheel in the keel is great for moving the kayak over a hard surface. I have the standard seat and it's fine for a short period of time, but I do want their new kingfisher seat.

Thought I should update this since we purchased the new kayaks.

My GF's son would not take my advice and go with a SOT. He wanted the same thing he test rode. The Ascend D10 sit in. He's 6'4" and i think that yak is way to small for him but he handles it well and is always way ahead of us waiting for us to catch up...lol.

We wanted to stay under $500 for my Gf's yak and stay at 10' or less and she will fish out of it as well as do some sight seeing. Did not want to buy anything without seeing 1st and wanted it asap. Not much of a selection around the area in stores so she also got an Ascend from Bass Pro. Hers is the D10T SOT and although it isnt setup to fish, I will be adding some rod holders for her aqnd whatever else we'll need.

These seem like pretty decent starter yaks and the ascend yaks are a Bass Pro product which gives us a full year to return them even if nothing is wrong and just decide we dont like them. Obviously once I drill some holes for rod holders, it isnt going back!!
