    Yesterday I learned a useful tip from a trucker (well, a youtube trucker) that is probably overlooked by many of us. It could save your life before you even reach the water.

    A lot of kayakers use some kind of tie-down strap to secure their load to the roof rack or on the trailer. Tip: When you are using whatever tie-down method you prefer, put the anchor on the driver's side (the "road side") and do all of the tightening/ knot tying/ lashing on the passenger side ("curb side"). This way, should you ever have to pull over to adjust your straps, you can do most of the work on the side away from the traffic.

    Bonus tip: everyone should know how to tie down a load with old-fashioned rope in case your usual method fails. Here are 2 variations of the usefule trucker's hitch:
