I have had people ask me about the Crab or Crabby Clouser fly pattern by Joe Bruce. It has been a VERY productive fly so here is a condensed version on how to tie the fly from the April 1999 Carroll county times(I actually still have a copy of the article someone gave me)
For those of you who don't tie here is Joe Bruce's website to purchase the crab fly http://www.joebruce.net/bruce39s-cra...d-clous39.html
Crab Clouser
Pattern Material:
Hook: Mustad 34007 or similar sizes 2 – 2/0 (I think Joe mostly used 2/0 hooks)
Thread: Red or Hot-Orange
Eyes: Lead Dumbbell eyes 1/36 – 1/16 Black
Wing: Olive Bucktail, over copper Flashabou, over Tan Bucktail, over Gold Krystal Flash, over White Bucktail.
ALL WING material tied same side of hook opposite side of dumbbell eyes.
1. Place hook in vise and tie on Dumbbell Eyes.
2. Reverse hook in vise
3. Tie in White Bucktail (all bucktail should be approx. 1/8th diameter) between where the underside Dumbbell Eyes are tied in and eye of hook)
4. Tie in about a dozen Gold Krystal Flash
5. Tie in Tan Bucktail
6. Tie in about 36 strands of Copper Krystal Flash
7. Tie in Olive Bucktail
NOTE: use head cement or similar between material tie in’s to add longevity to fly
