  • Advice on kayak fishing in Cape May

I will spend a few days in Cape May, NJ in a week or so. I plan to bring my Mini-X with me and hope to do some fishing. I have never fished there before and am seeking any suggestions on where to launch, where to fish, and target species and methods. Thanks in advance.

    John,

The surf on the Atlantic can be very rough at Cape May.

However, if you go to nearby Sunset Beach on the Delaware Bay you'll find calmer water.

There is a sunken concrete ship off the beach that may hold fish.

There are also salt marshes in Cape May. I've been on the boat tours through them and they look very "fishy."

I speak only as a visitor, not from fishing experience there.

    Good luck,

There are some back bay areas there that should hold fluke (flounder to us southern folk), croaker, spot, striper, weakfish, blues, etc. Give Chris Parsons a call at the Kayak Fishing Store and he will set you straight on what's happening down there!
      Used to fish more.

The fishing near the store can be stellar. There are a couple launches that will put you into some premium water.

Lately there have been some triggers caught within a stones throw of the shops launch. A couple miles done the road, there is some awesome flats fishing, tog and flounder.

I'm going to be in the area all week from 8/3-8/10, if you are there, drop me a line. Maybe we can talk Chris into getting out on the water as well...

Thanks guys. I will email Chris to get some starting ideas, and may drop by his shop on my way into town.

Thanks for the intel I will be there next week also on vacation and actually staying by the concrete ship. I won't have my kayak w/ me but plan on fishing from shore.

After fishing four days in the Cape May area, I wanted to share some info on where I launched. There are undoubtedly many other spots, but I launched at three places in and near Cape May. I also launched on Sunday from North Wildwood at the private ramp next to the Kayak Fishing Store.
