  • Deep Creek Lake Guide

I will be going to Deep Creek Lake for a family vacation from Aug 18-25. In May, I had arranged a guide (D.J.'s Charters; aka, DCL Family Fishing) for two half day outings during my August vacation. He originally quoted each trip at a little over $200...and then stated it was $275...which I said ok to. When he sent me an email a few days later, he said the price was $300, but when I called him he said that there was a mistake and the price would be the $275 he had quoted which included taxes. Today he called me and said the price would be $583 for the two half days. When I asked him why the price was now higher than agreed to, he said "that's ok, go find someone else to guide you" and then he hung up. Wow...

Anyway, now I need scurry around to find a guide. Does anyone have a guide to recommend that is honest and a good guide?

    Thanks,
    Bruce

Used a guy about four years ago. His name was Brent something and he was fantastic. We'd fished most of the week and caught a couple pickerel. That was it. Brent put us on the fish, both small and large mouth. Let me call a buddy and see if I can get his last name and contact info. BTW, I'll be out there the following week. Don't catch them all!

Yes - Brent Nelson is the way to go...He is/was Ken Penrod's resident guide on Deep Creek. Great fella. Here is link to their website. Good luck & pass the negative word around about DJs Charters...im glad you figured out is operation is a joke before you got on his boat. http://fishdeepcreek.com/

Thanks for the recommendation. Having a hard time reaching him...the phone number shown above has been disconnected. And he hasn't responded to an email I sent to him a couple of days ago, so I'm not sure the email address on Penrod's site for him is correct either. Any other ideas about how to reach him?

I just received an email from Brent a few minutes ago. We arranged a trip for next Wednesday. Looking forward to it...

A very popular tactic up there is flipping to docks or skipping worms under them. I use ZOOM Finesse worms on very light jig heads, that "skip" (like a stone), nicely along the water, on a side-arm cast, to make there way under the docks. Leave the bail open, let the worm fall horizontally, keep an eye on the line for any movement...once lure hits bottom, retrieve slowly. I would be curious if this is one of the tactics you will use. Good luck.

In Brent's email to me, he said we'd be skipping plastics under docks around mid-morning, and before that using top waters...

There's alot of good deep structure in that lake, try drop shotting secondary main lake points, find hard rock bottoms, deep crankbaits and bridge pylons. Deep grass edges are great also. There's alot of pickerel and yellow perch, which can get annoying if your going after small and large mouth or even walleye. I'd try and stay deep to keep away from the pickerel. And if u end up hooking or notice yellow perch following your bait move somewhere else. Good time to fish that like is at night when the water is calm and all the joy riders go in or the night

Thanks. In addition to going out with Brent for a day, I am also taking my kayak along for fishing on the other days. Do you know of any launch places for yaks besides the State Park?

I don't kno of any truly public ramps, however when I had my bass boats I launched from nearly all boat dealer/mechanic ramps for the same 5-10 dollar fee. They don't advertise it but if u ask they will likely oblige...however u may hav to b dropped off, then picked up...parking can b a premium for some of the shops
