  • cell phones on the water

Hey guys, it's snowing and to pass the time I figured I'd ask what kind of cell phones you guys take out with you. I bought a samsung rugby II because of it's durability, especially it's water resistance. I've gone in the drink with it in my pocket after slipping on a rock and it wasn't affected at all. I hear some of the smart phones have apps that are useful out there.

The rugby has a lot of you tube clips of people abusing them which was pretty much why I got one. My hobbies are too hard on my phones.

I should try one of those splash proof phones myself. Maybe when my present phone expires. I just have a regular phone. I keep mine in a waterproof box when I go out in the kayak. I rely on a VHF for my safety issues. I use a VHF that will send a DSC with my location.

However, some of the smart phones can download navionics information to essentially turn them into a nautical GPS. People come into the store with them. When we get to talking about fishing they go to their GPS map to talk about locations. I think one of the members had one at the January M&G. I use regular GPS/FF on my kayak.

i use iphones. currently an iphone 4. i use a small dry bag that i picked up from kayakfishingstuff. it even has a headphone jack that you can plug in headphones. I clip the small dry bag to my PDF so that it is next to me at all times. I dont rely on it for an emergency, but its a nice way to check work emails, etc.

iPhone4. I keep it in a water tight bag when not in use. I have an app that logs my paddle track, and it also shows my location on nautical charts which is helpful in finding structure.

Just a cheapo Verizon phone in a phone dry bag. It seems to have reception everywhere I've fished. I have a couple useful numbers on speed dial--DNR police, USCG, etc.

I have an iphone 4 but I rarely use it on the water. I have a navionics app that would work well as a gps but it drains the battery. If I'm trying to find something on the water I'll use it, but it usually sits in a dry bag with a see through window for emergencies. I got a VHF radio so hopefully I'll be able to communicate with the other yakers out there this year.
                    Used to fish more.

It is awesome! I have had issues with it keeping an accurate log of my track, but it is GREAT in finding structure. My friend put me on to it...he runs one of the water taxis in downtown annapolis.

I an Andriod in a couple of baggies .......... I agree with Mike ....... the GPS apps REALLY drain the batteries quick so I don't use it on the water.
