  • I love the smell of Snakehead in the morning...

Actually, I have only come across signs of Snakehead in the evening. Has anyone been successful catching them in the early morning or even midday? If so, what tackle were you using?

Time of day doesn't seem to matter much for me. I seem to have better luck on the high tides but I have heard alot of people say they like the low tide ??? Frogs, horny toads and jerk baits are usually on the end of my line.

They will bite anytime of day, though I tend to see a LOT of snakeheads breaking water in the early morning that will not take a lure. Later in the morning when that activity stops they tend to more catchable. Frogs - both buzz & hollow body - tend to be the lure of choice as they work well in shallow water and over/through the pads & grass and cause commotion on the surface attracting them. They will hit soft plastic swimbaits (worked in same areas and method as a frog), spinnerbaits & chatterbaits if the water depth allows and other plastics tossed in the pads will also get bit.

Friday I had one crush a gary yamamoto Watermelon slice senko (weightless) in pohick bay. It weighed in at 8.5lbs and 30". I've caught several others during the morning on Stanley Jigs Ribbit soft plastic frogs.

Thanks for all the info! This is my first year fishing. When does the Snakehead fishing die down for the winter? Is it a certain water temp?

Last yr I caught my last 2 snakeheads the week before Halloween but a friend caught 1 the last week in Oct. I got 2 in the rain last friday...first time catching em in the rain for me. Usually I catch them mid-day to late afternoon, especially when it's hot and sunny. Since I'm fishing in the thick weeds, it's always weedless frogs for me.

                  Weightless 12" ribbontail plastic worm:

but I think I have caught most of my snakeheads on spinnerbaits around high tide fishing from the inner weedline to the bank. I've had more luck early in the day at places like Mattawoman (before a parade of bass boats puts all the fish on high alert).

I've had a rough summer trying to catch them but in the last 3 weeks have done pretty good. 3 in one day (only one stayed on the stringer) all close to 30", then last friday the 30"er. here's a couple pics.

Has anyone got them on bait? There are tons of small toads in my neighborhood right now, I'm tempted to try one!

I would never use live bait for SH. They are quite vicious and will destroy your bait. If you have enough frog to use then go for it.
