I live in charles county, the less driving the better. I thought Smallwood State Park/Mattawoman, but I've read here that snakehead have kind of been fished out there. Is this true?

nah...that's B.S...there still some Snakeheads at smallwood park, what happen is due to the noise..they spooked and move to different locations...
too many boaters at that park...i don'trecommend you going there, instead try the same creek (Mattawoman), but upper stream towards the bridge at Route 224 or downstream at Mattawoman creek rd.
Mallows bay its good, but you have to be there before july, because of the hydrilla...the less grass, the better chances to catch them...because they are still spawning...right now is hard to find them...either because they are jus resting in top of the grass or at deeper water, and because they are not longer spawning, they don;t have 'fry' to protect...so they are less agressive....
other place that I'd recomend you is piscataway Creek, at farmington landing rd....as soon as you park there, go to the mouth of the back creek on your right side..32371_561830113857570_1806808358_n.jpg417978_502310433142872_504571042_n.jpg429988_587750764598838_271932440_n.jpg941315_578612008846047_777625420_n.jpg1005581_595649217142326_522055634_n.jpg1045140_595649047142343_1540852864_n.jpg936251_572721099435138_1844629837_n.jpg These are some examples for what you can catch at the places previously mentioned...

What I've try to say, was they are not spawning actively, like they did at late Spring and Mid- Summer...
I know they are still spawning...but not in the same number..I used to spot snakeheads every 20 or 30 ft from each other along piscataway creek, but not anymore.
Rigth now, i have located just 3 mature snakeheads ranging from24" to 30" and a couple of "juvies", wich are in the "nest'...but that's it for piscataway creek , at farmington...
And the ones that i've seen at mallows bay....they are to small...
By the way, I like to spend 8 to 16 hrs a day hunting for them...on weekends, and 5 hours on weekdays....let me know when are you gonna have chance and we can check "your spot"...I don't mind sharing mine...

Mattawoman holds plenty of snakeheads, especially in the back of the creek. We caught several a couple weeks ago and the females we caught were full of eggs. The bow hunters are working the area at night and taking a few, but there are so many I don't think you'll ever see it "fished out". This is the biggest one we got in Mattawoman that weekend, weighed 8.2 lbs, and I'm sorry I didn't catch it.

It's harder to catch snakeheads this year than last due to more dissolved oxygen in the water so they need not surface to breathe, thus, giving away their location, plus more peeps are targeting them. The shs are there but they have been hook-shy. My friends & I have caught a bunch the past 2 weeks where it was mostly off for catching them earlier this summer. I saw numerous new fry-holding spots yesterday and we caught 2. I catch mine in the thickest of grass and on the hottest of days, unfortunately, mine are not the beasts that il91068 is catching. Those big ones just spit the frog back to me!
