  • Inexpensive Trolling / Live Bait reels

Anyone have any advice on Inexpensive trolling / Live bait reels. I'm cutting back the cost on my next several rod builds and decided to continue with that idea with two new reels.

    Reel needs the following attributes.

Drag - at least 12 to 15lbs max - Star or lever
    Non Level-wind
Solid Free Spool engagement method. Lever or switch - No thumb bars
    Magged Casting control not needed
    Line Capacity - 275 +- yards of 20lb mono
    Clicker

    Price range $50 to $70

    What are my choices here.
    Daiwa?
    Penn?
    Okuma?
    etc..

Anyone used any of these type of reels? Any good or bad points?

    Cheers

        Hmm non levelwind...

What about a Penn jigmaster 501 or squidder 146? You can usually find them in good condition for about 30-45.

Any reason for non levelwind? TLD stars can also be had at decent prices sometimes, they are beast. Let usknow when you get the diameters figured out, I am looking forward to learning how to make rods and I'll need to get components too.

Oh why did you have to go and post that link. That is a killer deal. That might just bust my whole on the cheap strategy.

OK now its down to 1 cheaper reel and one Tyrnos. I don't think i can pass that deal up. the 10 series looks perfect. And a 2 speed to boot. Hell i might just slap the Avet on one rod and that reel on the other.

Ok now im looking for 1 reel.

Thanks for that link mdmakaira410. I just purchased the TYR10II. I could not pass that reel up at a near $200 discount. I had 2 in my cart but had to click the back button on the browser.

            Redfish,
I was thinking about one of those but i am hesitant to buy a used reel unless i can get my hands on it first or trust the seller. Although a Peen 501 with some nice accurate side plates would be nice. Well that puts me back into the $130 range. humm

As far as level-winds i just like the open topped non level-winds for trolling or heaver fishing. Less parts to foul up, Easier to pull out the inevitable birds nests and better suited to wind-on leaders. Also gives me more spool area to clamp on to the spool if i snag up and need to break the line.

I want one of those 501s with accurate plates and frame. I got a 500 with accurate plates and frame by accident with a somewhat low offer on ebay and it is awesome. Free spools forever. I'm hoping to sell or trade this one so I can get the 501. Saw one go the other night for 180+ which is crazy talk. That shimano is sweet, I got the buy one get one free tsunami rod deal with jimbo earlier in the year and I hope to do some trolling with it this spring.

No problem mmanolis. I got the tyrnos10 single speed but they sold out of those a few weeks ago. You def dont need the twospeed but for the price its still an absolute steal. We use the 20's for whiteys and sailfish and they are way better than the tld 25's and tiagra 30's we were using. IMO of course. Im still considering grabbing another.

                Michael,
Yeah thats how i found out about that deal on those reels, unfortunately they were sold out of those rods when we went to get them. You asked me how they were as far as size. I think they are the perfect size for the kayak and balance a boat rod better than say an SX. Heres a pic of the size comparison and a baitcaster for some scaling.

Definitely look like a sweet reel. I've tried my Avet on a few different rods I own and I can't figure out where I like it. Going to play around with it more this spring.

How do you like that mojo bass rod?

Go to the Flea Market on Saturday and you will find cheap but very usable reels that will fit your specs for probably 10 - 25 bucks ........

Mike, thanks for that link. I got two of the 10II reels myself. They should really be good for when I go to Florida.

Memory, I might try to slip by TriState on Saturday before I have to go to work. I might see some of ya'll there. Do you know what time it starts.
