  • Hemmingways

There was some discussion in one of the threads about Hemmingways closing and the use of parking. Isn't there a small tackle shop back in that complex somewhere, Lucky's or something like that. Maybe it would help if some of us, bought some tackle in that small shop. I understand that the prices are somewhat reasonable. I don't go to the Eastern Shore that much, but if some of the guys that do fish there gave the shop some business, maybe that would also help. Nothing like having a friendly tackle shop close to where you are fishing. Just a thought, just a thought.

You know, I think you might something. If we provide some business there, it'll probably be OK to park and kayak launch there.

Who patrols the lot? What are the rules for parking? It might be a "gray area" in terms of being allowed to park/launch there. I'm sure if we "provide business" we would satisfy the rule.

So if we buy something (e.g., hooks, lure, chapstick, gum) every time we park/launch there, would that qualify us to park/launch for several hours? Would the shop owners complain? If there's always parking spaces, I don't think shop owners will complain and call the tow trucks.

I've been to Lucky's it's a nice little tackle shop, its right at the turn off from the main road so I don't think the parking lot rule would apply.I fish at Hemmingways all the time and have never had a problem"buuutt" a man that gives kayak classes came up to me one time while I was launching and told me that he tried to launch with his class I guess, and was kicked out.

I'm green when it comes to kayak fishing in the bay but I've taken my old kayak to coastal South Carolina several times. My tactic was to find a marina, walk into the office and ask how much they would charge me to park and launch my kayak. I've never had a marina charge me. Has anyone tried this with the marina(s) by Hemmingways?

Who do you ask? The marina? Hemmingways? The other shops along the parking lot?

Hemmingways isn't a marina it's a restaraunt with a big parking lot that has access to a sandy beach where wind surfers use to launch from. Now its where kayak fishermen launch from once in a while. No one has posted a sign so some things are better left alone.

Crawdad may have a point about leaving it alone. Possibly someone could ask the guy at Luckys.

They were tearing the roof off of Hemmingways yesterday, Lucky's tackle shop is about 1/2 mile from where hemmingways was, so I don't know how much he knows about launching their, will go by tomorrow.
Don't know if it works until you try it.

I guess I didn't convey my point/question very well. I realize Hemmingways is a restaurant but there is a marina right there as well. I was just wondering if it wouldn't be worthwhile to approach the marina and ask if they would charge to park and launch a kayak....just in case the current parking/launch falls through.

Sometimes I wonder if a good thing should be left alone, until the situation dictates otherwise. Only because I know business men, if you ask, it may set a light bulb off in their head, that maybe they can may additional revenue by charging kayak fisherman.

This is like Solomons too. At Solomons they charge boats to use the ramps. Fisherman who use the peir at a sandy beach do not get charged, but kayakers who use the sandy beach by the peir gets charged for using the boat ramp, even though you do not use it.
