  • Warm Water Discharges

Warm water discharges: I know that there are several in our area. In the baltimore area there is Carroll Island & Brandon Shores. I think. Has anyone fished these by kayak? Any help on access points? I have a few days that, if the weather holds up, I might be able to fish.

Any other ww discharges that I should try instead?

I was wondering how safe it was at FA. I've been there a few times and it seemed fine. I saw some police officers there so I asked how the area was and they didn't think it was unsafe...but I don't know for sure. Have you heard of anything going down over there?

As far as Carol Island goes, I think you can probably get there by launching out of Dundee Creek. I've spent more time in Saltpeter and Dundee than anywhere else and I can vouch that it is a very nice area. However, from that side you can't get near the power plant because there is a larger perimeter keeping you from getting anywhere near it. Maybe there is some access on the south side. At any rate, the water is only 3-5' through that whole area that it still may be too cold despite a water discharge.

its not real bad if your fishing there but if some junkies see your heading out your vechicle might get broken into.

Unfortunately I have to admit I've been to Ft Armistead many, many times for numerous reasons over the years. I grew up around the Pasadena area..... Believe it or not, it's a popular boat launch/cookout location when it's warm. For whatever reason you care to imagine, the parking lot used to get a lot of traffic. The place seems pretty shady upon first sight and it isn't the most scenic but I wouldn't have a problem leaving my vehicle there. That being said, I wouldn't leave it there overnight but during the day should be fine.

Also wanted to add that a couple of guys on another board I visit got into 60+ fish with the best being two 30+ lb stripers over the weekend. This was right off of Calvert Cliffs. Water looked pretty rough but the fishing was good.

MD410 launched out of FT. Armstead not long ago. He didn't have much luck, but felt that it did have promise. Next time he is online, you may want to talk to him about Brandon Shores.

I grew up in Pasadena myself. Of course going to Ft. Armstead was mostly for beer drinking. Of course that was before it was a park. Back then it was undeveloped.

I would agree on the FA comments. A little shady but I fished there 8 or 10 times over the summer without any issues. Might have just gotten lucky. Theres a guy at work who is always talking about how good the fishing is at the discharge but he has only been there once so I am not sure what he actually knows Good fishin

Like Dogfish said, I did fish Brandon Shores on new years day this year. I am not quite sure what the deal is with the discharge there. I found a 9-10 degree temperature difference in about a 100 square yard area right next to the outlet pipe. The water was about 45* there. The problem is that area was less than 2 feet deep and there was no current moving through to push the warm water out deeper. The plume only lasted for about two hours then temps started falling back into the upper 30's. Needless to say I saw no fish activity at all and started off the new year with a big fat skunk. I have read some conflicting reports that the plant is shut down right now but I definitely found warmer water . Now it wasn’t in the magical 50's, but I figure 10 degrees is enough to move some bait into that area. I would suspect that if the plant is operational then weekdays during business hours would be the best time to fish there. I would like to go back at some point when i can catch some moving water during a prime energy consumption time to see what the deal is. The paddle from Ft. Armistead is about 1/2-2 miles with a scenic view of a landfill and dilapidated industrial stuff everywhere.

The lot isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The launch is actually pretty nice but the crowd of people that hang around there leaves a lot to be desired. I would have no problem leaving my car there again during the middle of the day but I wouldn’t want to launch/load up in the dark. There is enough traffic through that lot that i wouldn’t be worried about my car being broken in to. That being said, if you are the only car in the lot I’d go somewhere else.
