  • Monday, October 14, 2013- Who Wants To Go

Monday is a holiday, plus I know there are others besides me that are affected by the federal shutdown. The weather forecast is good. It looks like we will probably be rained out for Saturday's meet and greet. I am hoping to have all of the goodies reinstalled on my replacement kayak. I need to do a shakedown cruise and I want to fish.

    Who is in?

Who the heck is that? Dumbest "handle" I've ever seen. Probably can't fish worth a lick either...

I fish the North East River 4 to 5 times a week. The striper bite turned off right after the weather change, but Monday the bite might be on again. I usually catch 16-17 inch striped bass, but recently caught a few in the 20-21 inch range. They tend to be a bit skinny compared to the flats stripers. I find blue lipless crankbaits work decent in cloud cover and gold colored plastic swim baits are good during sunny conditions. They haven't schooled up like they normally do this time of year. Been catching 2 or 3 in one location then have to move on to another. In past years, all you had to do was follow the terns dive bombing the baitfish. Haven't been may birds this year. Could have been a result of the dry conditions. In years past, the fall is usually the wet season. Looks like weather has changed so maybe the striper numbers will increase.

Best time is during an outgoing tide which is what you are looking at Monday morning. Incoming tide is next best then high tide. Low tide is very slim pickins. They will bite during low tide but not as agressive so I switch to a lower profile bait. They are more likely to follow the bait to the yak and swipe at it as you pull it out of the water so I pause the bait at the surface before taking it completely out of the water.

I have caught a few nice largemouth in areas you typically find striped bass. The largemouth usually hold around wood, but when the water cools it is normal to catch them just about anywhere. After all this rain the water temp should be much cooler. It was like bathwater last week and the bass were tight on cover. Tuesday they started spreading out and actually caught a fat 21" largemouth trolling for stripers.

R U Kidding? The more the merrier! Although I must warn you, being within a 100 yards of Doc Irv for more than a couple minutes may be hazardous to your mental health...
