  • Cold weather fishing near me?

I'm taking a break from chasing muskie for awhile and was hoping to get some ideas for some fishing trips I could plan in the near future through January. This will be my first year fishing through the winter from my kayak. Could anyone hook me up with some good ideas? From what I've gathered the only fish tha I know actually worth targeting through out the winter are pickerel and crappie ( near me anyways). I live in shepherdstown wv about 15 minutes from Taylor's landing. Thanks!

Have you ever tried to fish for smallmouth bass in the winter? Looking for wintering holes where they get out of the current, fishing suspending jerkbaits and tubes?

The blue cat fishing is hot in December and January in the James River from Richmond to Williamsburg. Prime time to catch monster sized fish. I would think that the same would be true on the Potomac around your area.

I believe there is great smallmouth fishing in the Potomac up there and I think Antiedum (spelling) Creek is good for Trout ...... also, the Muskies should be good in the winter.

Pepco Power Plant warm water discharge in Dickerson, Md

Its just a little ways downstream from the mouth of the Monocacy. Can be accessed from the Potomac River or the C&O Canal Towpath.
Been there pulling smallies in the dead of winter with a foot of snow on the ground.

Where do you launch at Dickerson?

Usually we walk to the spot via the C&O Canal Towpath. Its about a mile from the parking lot off Martinsburg Rd.

I've only fished the area once from a boat. We launched a mile and a half upstream at the mouth of the Monocacy. There's a fee free boat ramp at the end of Mouth of Monocacy Rd. We did it in a canoe and it was nice having the help for the upstream paddle out. I recommend walking in and fishing from shore.
