I need some feedback on what I should use for tautog for next season. I fish in Indian River Inlet, in Delaware from shore. I don't know what rig to use, Rob's tautog rig, a heavy jig, and a sinker that slides up and down the line. Which one do you suggest? The current is really strong there and you need a 2 1/2- 3 oz minimum. Also, I need a good rod and reel. I prefer a spinning and I need a longer rod than usual because I'm fishing from shore. My budget is around 300 for the rod and reel. Any suggestions will help me out.

Rob Choi's tog rig is good. Variations of the concept work too. Single, double. Easier to stay on bottom with a sinker blow your hooks, instead of a sliding sinker on your main line.
Sure you can use a spinning reel, but a baitcaster or conventional will give you better one-handed control of your drops. You want your rod to be able to handle the hookset with the size weight you're using, but I wouldn't recommend anything too heavy... I always want to give the fish I'm targeting a (small) chance to break my rod.
