Thank you for posting the background articles.

Per the DNR's statistics the increase allotted for recreational fishermen from 2013 to 2014 is larger than the increase for commercial harvests -- 15.4% vs. 12.4%. Also recreational fishermen are allotted well over half of the 2014 quota. I doubt there will be a 15.4% increase in the number of recreational fisherman next year so I presume most of that increase is due to the projected abundance of the maturing 2011 striper class and the DNR's presumption that recreational fisherman will catch more keepers next year.

I'm not defending the DNR's action, but short of reducing the recreational daily limits in 2014 I do not know how they could avoid raising the overall quota for recreational fishermen in 2014 given the large number of 18 inch fish coming. Admittedly, I find fisheries science extremely mysterious and I may have misinterpreted what I read.

But if we do indeed feel strongly about the DNR's decision there is nothing to stop us (recreational anglers) from releasing more stripers than we are required to in 2014. Since the majority of the quota is allotted to us we can give the stripers a numerical advantage the DNR does not think they need.

Mark - thanks for posting. usually threads like this are about as fun to be around as a loud drunk at a party screaming their opinion on politics and religion is what everyone should believe,..

i can't say the scenario you laid out is the underlying basis for their decision but it's definitely food for thought.

i'm really pretty sorry i didn't go to the mssa meeting with Tom Oconnell speaking on striped bass mgt. i saw it announced as being free and open to the public and knew i'd be interested in anything he had to say on the subject. but just didn't make time to attend,..
