Like most other things in life, you get what you pay for. You can get a functional FF unit for under $200. It is likely to have some combination of these: a) small screen, b) black and white images, c) low resolution, d) limited user settings and controls. That may be sufficient for your needs. However, many of us who are passionate about kayak fishing have spent more than that to get superior features like: a) color screen, b) FF and GPS capability, c) more user settings and controls to customize your screen views, d) built-in mapping charts, d) higher resolution images, and e) down-scan or side scan. All of these features cost extra, but they do provide more information to the user and help you position your kayak in places that improve your chances of finding fish.

In addition to the base cost of the unit you buy, be prepared to spend more for sales tax, mounting bracket (many options but all have extra costs), stainless steel hardware for mounting, possibly some electrical connectors, battery, battery bag or box.

Only you know what your true budget is. Some times the least expensive unit is not the cheapest in the long run -- if it does not meet your needs and you upgrade a year later, you have not invested your funds wisely.

I hope you find a unit that meets both your needs and budget.

However, if you just want the basic ....... I would recommend against the smart cast ......... I also like the hummingbirds because there is less problems with connections and their quick release on some of them ........ GPS on a depth finder is really handy. You might consider taking the money and buying a used 1 to get more for your bucks

Put the budget for "fish scents" to better use on the FF.

I got the mark-4 early this year and used it on my skiff all season. I really like the unit and have had zero problems with it. The black and white screen is way better than older models and can be easily seen day or night. Of course color would be nicer but this thing has put me on many fish. I like it so much that I have a ram mount on my Christmas list so I can use it on my kayak as well.
