Anyone fishing kiptopeke between Christmas and New years ?

  • #2
I might if I hear about some fish caught in that area. Been pretty dead there lately. I will likely be in Norfolk weekend after Christmas.

I'm dying to get down there, but I'm not sure when it will be... I've never been, but I was looking at some pictures and it looks like a really cool place, even if the fish aren't biting...

Fished there for 9 hours last Fri without a single bite. Same thing with everybody I talked to out there, and have not seen any good reports online from there lately either. But if you've never been, it is a pretty awesome trip regardless. The only thing with that place is the ships smell pretty wonderful when the breeze dies down. Might want to bring some mentholatum or something like that with you.

That place has been terrible for Stripers for the past two years. Better chance heading out to bouy 18 and drifting.

I wanted to try that but it was pretty rough into the afternoon hours and I would not try going far from the ships at night. Some boaters filleted a few cows and left the heads on the beach right before I launched in the morning, so they have been catching some in the general area.

I'm looking to go down this weekend possibly. I've fished down there before but never tried for bass and have been itching to go. Contingent based on whether I can get somebody to go with me though. I have a couple maybe commitments so far. Looks like the current will be good for the drift Pinch mentioned. PM if anybody is interested in meeting up.

I might head back down that way and play it by ear on whether to fish back in ER or head out to Kipto. With the wind they are forecasting, might be able to fish behind the set of ships closest to the the launch on Sat. I don't think you will see any kayaks outside the ships in solid 15 mph winds and 3 to 4' waves. I should have tried the drift when I had the chance last time I was there. The wind is not expected to lay down at all this Sat like it did for us last time.

Will keep an eye on the weather. Hopefully it changes for the better, but not looking good so far.

Forecast I've seen currently has 2ft for Saturday: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/zone/east/akqmz.htm

If conditions don't look favorable for a drift by Friday evening I'll likely bail.

                  ...and ER = Elizabeth River?

That's encouraging. Will keep an eye on it, forecasts are always changing. I'm also not that interested in going out there unless I can pull off the drift.

Yeah, Elizabeth River. Saw a couple 5 to 7 pound specks caught back in the cove last weekend. Only caught some smaller ones near the high rise bridge in front of the hot ditch myself, but I did hook into a nice gator only to have it shake the hook.
