  • Why the MD State Park Passport is a good deal(imho):

Now, granted, I already pay enough in taxes and the state has screwed over MD state parks in the past but for $75(MD residents) & $100 (non-MD residents) you get free entry into all MD state parks that have entrance fees for you and up to 10 others in your vehicle plus free boat launch all year long...expires Dec31, and I think it's a good deal.

Otherwise, you fork over the daily entry fee & the launch fee should you use the boat ramp...some places like PLO have a soft launch which is free & a concrete launch which is $10 or $12 , others just have the concrete ramp and you have to pay to launch...boat, kayak, motorized inner tube.

You also get 10% off in the park concessions. I like supporting the park's store when I haven't brought my own. It also includes books and maps and bait that are for sale. There's also 10% off boat rentals should you not wish to use your kayak at the Bay Bridge, rent a boat @SPSP.

With this pass (and I've bought it the past 2 years) I go explore MD's state parks, not worrying if I got my money's worth if the weather looks questionable or if I get there in the evening w/just a lil bit of daylight remaining. I get waved in instead of waiting in a long line while someone else is asking a thousand questions to the booth operator. At state parks w/ nobody at the entrance booth and it's the honor system pay: entry is free, just hang your pass on the rear-view mirror once you park.

Now this pass doesn't guarantee you entrance...eg, you show up to Sandy Point SP at 11am on a v hot summer morn and the park is maxed out....but you don't have to pay when they do let you in.

The fees pay for the clean restrooms which I like. They also pay for the bathhouses w/showers. This is nice if you've been out all day and need to refresh. The staff at the state parks keep the parks generally clean...it's the people who trash the parks. The staff @ SPSP does an incredible job cleaning up after a busy day...whatever happened to pack out your own trash? The launches are functional and give quick access to various waters where we like to fish. Having a pass makes you not have to worry about carrying any cash around. Having a pass says you support MD state parks. Additionally, it saves you money in the long run. For example,I usually fish @ PLO for the day and evening, launching when I can day or night....if I do this 4 times my pass is paid for. Plus I often go to Smallwood SP, Janes Island SP, SPSP, Rosaryville SP, Patapsco SP, Greenbrier SP, C Assateague SP...and I'd like to visit other state parks as well to fish, launch, pedal, or hike so it makes sense for me. Also, @SPSP you can get a special pass that will allow you access into the park to fish from shore or to launch at night or before the park opens to the general public(see the rangers on duty about that).

If you are 62 and older the Golden Pass is $10, gets you only in the state parks (everyone else in your car must pay) but does not include the launch fee....if you only soft launch, then maybe this pass is better for you. This pass, however, does get you 50% off the camping fee...which can add up if you camp a lot.

I hope this is helpful to everyone and I hope all my info is correct. I hope someone can use this info to save themselves some moolah too. Feel free to add any additional info I may not have posted. You can purchase this passport from the MD DNR website.

If you use Sandy Pt a lot, as I do, you are given a magnetic card so you can go to a much shorter line to get in the park or can go in before the ticket taker comes in the morning.

Do you need to register your kayak or get it licensed to use the state hard launches? I was talking with kayakers in PA and they needed to license the boat to use the parks. Is there separate launch fees from entry fees that the pass doesn't cover?

No ....... Only if you have an engine on it ........ You usually pay the launch fees at the gate along with the admission.

            Good post.

Annual park passes are generally a good deal for park users and certainly support a worthy cause.

If I may add, an annual pass to Anne Arundel County Parks costs $40. Otherwise the charge is $6 per visit for many of the parks in the county. Some county parks like Jonas Green are free. But the larger parks with playgrounds, hiking trails and other user facilities are not. In Pasadena, Ft. Smallwood and Downs are two large county parks with car top boat launches that charge entry fees.

If you're 60 years old and a county resident you can get a lifetime pass for free. I'll be getting mine later this year.

Correct, if you get the passport( I got mine online & they mail it to you) and you frequent SPSP, you can get the magnetic card too for off-hours entry @SPSP by going to the Ranger Station just outside the main entrance. Dunno how it's done w/the Senior Citizen card... Either online or at a DNR Service Ctr. Perhaps someone w/ this card can chime in.

                PA is def different

Kayaks even w/o a motor must be registered to use PA launches. Maybe someone from PA can be more specific.

I ordered mine for the firstime last season and am very glad I did it. A lot more convenient. I'm going to order mine on line asap. As far as the magnetic card pass, I got a letter to pick mine up at the Sandy state park admin office.

The card is covered in the cost of the pass. You do have to show up at the ranger station/office at Sandy Point during their normal work hours. Also, the cards are good for just one year. You need to turn in the old one and get a new one each year.

I have no familiarity with the senior card. I will reach the age threshold next year and will look into it then.

As far as Sandy Point goes, there is no separate launch ramp fee. The only fee is to enter the park. It may work differently at other state parks.

PA launching regs are sort of convoluted depending on who owns the launch. For a MD resident going to PA, if your canoe/kayak is not registered in MD then most lakes/rivers in PA require that you buy some sort of annual sticker that covers you for the most of the state.

Since my canoe is registered in MD, I am good to go at most of the PA launches to include PA State Parks. But there are a few launches, that if I launched there, I would need to buy a PA launching permit from their Fisheries Department.

Are you as confused now as I am??? Like I say, its convoluted. If I'm not sure then I ask the closest authority. If there is none to be found then I launch anyway and hope for the best. Over the years I have never been checked. I figure that if I did get caught without the proper launch sticker then I'd play my "Dottering Old Man" card. That almost always gets my out of a fix.

My wife gets one free every year for all the volunteer work she does down at PLO.

FYI - anybody can do this.

If you log 100 hours or more for the year then you get a free MD State Park Pass for the following year.

This PDF has more information and explains how you get the free pass.

Assateague makes you pay regardless if you use the soft or concrete boat launch.... criminal! My vehicle was ticketed because I didn't pay when I used the soft launch and parked there. $10 to launch a kayak, seriously?! Now its a quick soft launch and park over in the NPS visitors center lot for free.

Not a fan of the sunset close either. Some people like to fish after the sun goes down.
