  • Winter Fishing on the Severn River

    Hey ya'll,
Has anybody ever had much luck fishing the Severn in the winter? If so, any good techniques that seem to be more successful than others? I'm new to the area and can't seem to find much that works. Thanks for the help!

John Veil would be a good person to ask, put I have caught small sunfish, pickerels, and yellow perch in the creeks that go Into the Severn.

From November through mid-March when pickerel season closes, pickerel can be found in many of the Severn tributaries. I and other have made quite a few posts over the past two months and in previous years that describe how to rig up and where to look. If you are more interested than that, send me your email address and I can send you a presentation I prepared last year on catching pickerel in tidal waters.

Striped bass can congregate on debris piles in the river. I have caught them in Nov, Dec, and early Jan, but not after that. Other anglers (like Chimo) have a better jigging touch than me and have reported more success.

In the old days (long before I began winter fishing in 2006), yellow perch were plentiful. Sadly they are not at all common in most of the tributaries where I fish.

The white perch that are abundant in the shallows of all Severn tributaries do not return until early May.
