  • Snakehead

Charles County is running a naming contest to re-brand the Northern Snakehead to something a bit more appetizing. With a tip of the hat to Capt. Mike this one is easy... Potomac Pike!

Reminds me of when we got to vote to rename the Bullets, and they picked the Wizards! Ugh!

I vote for Snakeface, or Diehard Shallow Bass.

I call them Potomac Steelhead since I have to club it every time to calm it down.

The winning name will be sent to the Department of Natural Resources in the hope that the state will consider changing the fish's name.
I really don't have a problem with the name Snakehead. But, do they really think this will work? I mean, are there other fish that have a different name in a particular state?

I like snakehead it sounds badass. I guess renaming could make it more appetising though looking at chilean sea bass aka. patagonian toothfish.

I doubt DNR would even consider changing the name. They would prefer that we kill as many as we can to keep the numbers under control. A name change could confuse anglers and potentially cause them to transport them into another body of water (like someone transporting a couple dozen young ones as bait in a bucket).

I know some people that would eat if they didn't hear the name Snakehead. Much like when they started calling Dolfin fish, Mahi-Mahi. Maybe we just have to find out what the Hawaiians call Snakehead.

I know different areas call some fish by different names, Croaker-Hardheads and Stripers-Rockfish. I don't think there is an official name change just locals calling them what they are used to.

They are one of the most common staple food fish in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and other South East Asian countries where they are extensively cultured. Apart from their importance as a food fish, snakeheads are also consumed as a therapeutic for wound healing as well as reducing post-operative pain and discomfort, and collected for the international aquarium pet trade. -wikipedia

Incredible marketing.....no one would but the PT until they changed the name.

I like snakehead as well but Capt. Mike calls them Potomac Pike. Not sure if that would make people want to eat them though.
