      LOL essentially the same outcome.

I had a thru-hull fitting that wasn't properly rigged/sealed. Conditions were rough. Everytime I took water over the bow & sides, it drained partially into the hull. I wasn't aware until it was too late. Boat was too unstable for me to make it to shore, and too unstable to self-rescue. I am surprised the yak didn't sink after seeing how much water was inside after being towed to shore.

I did last summer. Was floating below conowingo around deer creek. Gates opened and water was flowing real fast. The bite was on and I wanted to hit one more spot. Tried to stop broadside to a rock to make a couple casts and over I went...dumb idea with water moving like that. I didn't have my seat strapped in. Lost it. $400 to replace. Owie.

I had the original Liquid Logic Manta Ray 14,that was a great kayak for getting somewhere and had a dry ride but would turtle in a heart beat, hard to re-enter with the high sides and round bottom. if you thought about turning around for anything in the tank well or even set the hook hard you were over. I hated that kayak I went swimming every time I used that kayak.
Now I have the Ride 135 & have never come close to turning that one over. you can stand and walk around on this kayak.

My first kayak fishing experiance in 2006 I lived in a town home community on the water in pasadena and they had a kayak rack next to the beach and one of the long time residents told me the yellow kayak on the end has been there awhile and everyone kind of used it like community boat. It was an ocean kayak, I believe a drifter I used it a few times but found out real quick i exceeded its weight limit. It dumped me many times and was hell for me to get back in on open water so I only took it out in summer and the water where I used it was a shallow back creek. It was the reason I fell for kayak fishing but also why it took me a long time and a lot of testing to find the right yak for me

No turtle yet. Have only had my yak one season and only took it out 6 times. All those times I was way too cautious. Maybe a good turtle or two would get the fear out of me, then then I go on. Had a brother who drowned, so I'm a bit paranoid.

              Best Regards,

Rightfully paranoid, Stan. Sorry for your loss.

                  Never turtled before,

The ocean kayak has a pretty low center of gravity...I think the closest I've come was at oregon inlet (OBX) this fall I had a situation where my anchor got hung in some rocks and before you know it the current was dragging the side of my boat under...I quickly threw my legs over the side and regained stability.

I've used the "leg pontoon" trick on other occasions where the waves are funky, or to add a needed moment of stability... I guess now that I think about it that only works for folks who are paddling and have their legs free.

I've done a turtle coming back to the beach in the surf of Assateague in an OK Prowler 13. The important equipment was strapped down so no losses there just pliers, scissors, and the only pair of nice sunglasses I've ever owned. Timing is everything in the surf and I didn't have it that day. I've practiced thousands of times too but every surf recovery/launch is so different depending on the conditions.

Through practice I've noticed that when I do turtle in the surf it's when my kayak gets sideways and then it always goes over my head in the wave. So when I know it's going to happen its best not to fight it but rather get my head down, let the kayak ride over me, and avoid being knocked out. Then get up and grab it before the next wave rolls it again!

Broke a fishing rod too.

                      Greg couldn't stop laughing.

This is the hole the rock tore in my bow and I had to weld it once I go home.

Bryan and I are stil laughing ! That's the same day Sami turtled her kayak on the Antietam.

I have turtled once in my commander while trying to stand on the Conococheague and once on my Ride 135 on a river clean up on the Antietam.

I'm starting to see a pattern here on the Antietam Rob !

Maybe it's the ghosts of Antietam pushing you over....

A sailboat quick release is a good idea to have on your anchor trolley ,just pull the cord and anchor is free, hopefully you have a float on your anchor cord.

Let me just say. DO NOT try to take a wizz while in your kayak. It can be dangerous. Probably even more so for the ladies.

No turtle yet in OK trident prowler 13, seems stable but i have not tried to stand in it yet to fish. Did swamp a johnboat in Herring bay, lost motor, gear, Hopkins lurer stuck in the top of my work boot while the other end was still tied to a rod, made it hard to tread water until I realized what it was pulling on my leg. After while holding onto the swamped boat, a commercial crabber came by and picked my dad and I out of the drink. Funny, didn't really panic until the crab boat got right along side of us and for some reason I blew the portable air horn at him until it ran out. I have a lot of respect for the bay and what she can throw at you in heartbeat. Have practiced self rescue several times while others around, a must do for those who haven't.
