  • Best all around rod & reel for the bay?

If you only had one outfit*, what rod/reel combo would you go with? More looking for advice on line weight/reel capacity and rod length than brand name.

For what it's worth, I tend to go "light", normally fishing medium weight and more so down to ultralight (6lbs test and under) for fresh water.

*Conventional tackle...I have the bases covered (2-9wt) for fly rods/reels.

My go to reel is a shimano Baitrunner 6000D. This reel is great for casting lures but is awesome for live lining. For a rod I would find something that fits your budget and feels balanced. I like to use a MH Fast action rod with a length of 5'9" to 6'6". For line I tipically use 15# braid and 30# to 60#mono leaders for living for when blues are in. 15# mono leader for when they are not.

Bait runner is a great choice if you had to stick with just one reel. Troll, cast, or liveline.

6000 series reels are much larger than what I had in mind. I was kind of thinking 2500 series....maybe 3500 if I was going heavy.

Yeah, 6000 is a little heavy. My stable ranges from 1000 to 4000. I think 2500-3000 is the sweet spot.
