First trip this year but it wasn't for fishing. I needed to check out the new battery and motor mount on my OC Trident.
At 0930 the water was nice with a light breeze blowing out of the west maybe 320*. I was just cruising between the two bridges testing different speeds and playing around. Come about 1100 the wind reversed to about 060* and came up to I'm guessing 12 to 15 with higher gusts. Luckily the tide was coming in but the wind still made some really nice rollers. If the tide was going out, it would have been two to three footers easily. I was able to make 5 MPH into the wind and current with my Endura Max 40 and nearing the beach I still had to carry 50% until I was inside the rock jetty or the wind would have blown me sideways.
I learned what I needed to know in the couple of hours I was out. I need to make a wedge to slip under my motor's mount so that it is angled backwards. As I come up on power, the mount flexes and moves the motor forward of perpendicular.
I also had prop vibration which is more noticeable from 60 to 100%. I am using a MinnKota two blade prop. Can these be balanced on a dowel or drill bit or something? I had a spare but didn't feel like going in to change it. During the winter I shaved some flash off it to smooth it out. That's what probably screwed it up.
Before I left, two guys in orange perceptions came to go fishing. By then it was blowing up pretty good. They said they were going to troll up river. (both were paddlers) I told them I thought the tide was going to change around 1600 so they might have some help coming back to the beach if they stayed that long. When the sun was out it was a super day but it got a little chilly when it ducked behind a cloud. The two guys never heard of this place so I gave them the URL.
Can't wait until next weekend!
