Anybody here ever do any real surf launches? Most of our areas have relatively tame beaches or boat ramps. Just curious if anyone has done a real surf launch & landing. I see articles and youtube vids...would be cool to get other perspectives. I'd like to give it a try one day...

I have contemplated launching from Cape henlopen while my wife lays on the beach. I am hesitant to even take the yak though not knowing how high the surf would be. We will only take day trips and I don't want to haul the yak + gear + surf fishing gear as a backup.Mike

Nags Head, where the waves can be a good size. Getting in, I had to walk the kayak out over the breakers. It was getting out that was quiet tricky. I ended up washing up onto the beach like a discarded clam shell with my yak about 25 feet away. Glad I didn't have anything valuable with me! I'll never do it again in big waves.Last edited by Pc4sun; 05-07-2014, 01:41 PM.Peggy

I would say read the waves and assess them yourself. Are they tight waves? ect. In this case it was summer and I had never done it before so i figured why not try...
That day we had good waves 3-4' but the period in between was long enough for me to walk out through the first and then get on and paddle through the trough and over the next wave....
I would say if it looks sketchy and your young and dumb go for it...

I haven't launched through the surf yet going to do it this year but I spent a lot of time surf fishing and think if you can read the waves right and are patient it should not be a problem I was going to head to Assauteage with minimal gear and just play in the surf for a while and get used to itD Hawk
