  • What to use - fish on bunker

I was out today and marked allot of fish and bait and snagged a bunker. Had a little schoolie action and one good bite - lost him half way to the boat.

Any suggestions for what to use when the fish are feeding on bunker?

The good bite came on an Xrap ghost color - long rips and not much pause between.

1/2 oz. Rattletraps, 4 " curly tailed jigs on a 1/4-1/2 oz. head, and Storm Swim shads (Bunker color, naturally) do a nice job when the fish are feeding on Bunker. These can be cast or trolled. You want something with a quick, tight, wobble.
If using a Rattletrap, do yourself and the fish a favor by bending over two out of each of the three hooks on each treble, and mash the barb down on the third. Because stripers tend to take lures deeply, it is difficult to extract a lure when the fish is struggling, and often you end up hooking yourself.

Better yet, replace the treble hook with a nice bucktail and mash down the barb. As long as you keep positive pressure on him, he's not going nowhere.

When and if the blues are ripping through them the rockfish sit under the carnage and pick off the pieces so chunk the bunker and let it drift down to the bottom and slowly bounce it.

That was my suggestion.... snag a bunker and drop it down.
