I would have been insisting on an mri or at least an xray if I was really in that much pain. Used to go to a chiropractor almost 20 years ago, who told me I had a 'subluxation'. The pain would just come back and decided it wasn't worth it after a while....my boss at the time would pay for it out of pocket because he did not want to lose me. I have dealt with pain like you describe more than a few times--basically paralyzed by it, hurt to breathe and everything but I doubt my ribs were dislocated. I still think I just had major muscle strains or maybe a flare up of this mysterious 'subluxation' the chiropractor diagnosed me with.
I was leaning more towards acupuncture than a chiropractor recently, but the tiger balm and my little battery operated tens unit keeps me working so far. Anyway, glad you are better and hope you don't have to suffer with chronic back pain like I have for the last 20 years.
