This is the one I use on my canoe.

I plan to buy another for the kayak when I take it down to OBX this September.

I use something similar through a scupper hole to secure the yak to my deck.

I have a couple of these that I use on my kayaks. I like them because you can get them in different lengths. If you search Amazon you can buy them in pairs with the locks keyed alike.

I know a number of folks that load their boat the night before and not lock their kayak to the rack. It would take all of about 17 seconds to cut the straps and load your kayak into the back of some scumbags pickup. I also know folks that have had their unlocked kayaks boosted right out of their back yard. I see little difference. If you value your stuff, lock it up. It's not 100%, but usually a fair deterrent.

I have the master lock stuff you can buy Home Depot. I got a 3 pack of the coiled cables real cheap last year and they fit perfect through the scupper hole. I also have several of the non-coiled longer ones they sell but they do not fit easily through scuppers. I use them in addition to the coiled cables and attach to the tie down anchors in the bed of my truck when I have my kayak up on my ladder rack. I also use the really long one to lock up my yak to the fence by my driveway when I'm too lazy to put it away and also when I store it in the yard.

I use a standard 6 foot Kryptonite cable lock https://www.kryptonitelock.com/Pages...PNumber=000860. I just slide it throught the scupper and around my thule rack, leaving the extra length inside of the kayak. I could use a shorter length, but the 6 footer allows me to lock it up to my deck when it is stored.
